CLEVELAND – The Delta State Statesmen (9-10, 3-3 GSC) broke a three game losing streak with a 69-47 victory over the Buccaneers of Christian Brothers (15-5, 3-3) Thursday, Jan. 27 at Sillers Coliseum. The victory gets the Statesmen back into the runnings in the Gulf South Conference.
“I thought the kids defended well and did a good job,” head coach Jason Conner said.
The Statesmen did an outstanding job spreading the ball around and making the Buccaneers work hard on defense. The green-and-white ended the night with 19 total assists and only seven turnovers.
Marqueys Brown had an excellent game scoring 18 points and rebounding five times.
Ladarrin Williams also had a exceptional game. He scored a season-high 11 points and pulled in five rebounds.
The Statesmen went into halftime with a 29-21 lead but not before it changed four times. The eight-point lead was the largest in the first half. The Statesmen shot just under 50 percent from the floor as opposed to the Buccaneers who shot a measly 22.6 percent.
The Statesmen never allowed the Buccaneers to gain the lead in the second half. They shot an impressive 58 percent from the floor on the night (29-50). They also shot 53.3 percent from behind the arch (8-15).
The Statesmen will hit the road for an important GSC contest against Arkansas-Monticello Saturday, Jan. 29 at 4 p.m. This will begin a three game road trip for the Statesmen.
