Lady Statesmen pound Christian Brothers 84-49

CLEVELAND - There was no contest for the Delta State Lady Statesmen (17-1, 5-1 GSC) against the Christian Brothers Lady Buccaneers (7-11, 0-6 GSC) in the Thursday night matchup at Sillers Coliseum. The Lady Statesmen pounded the Lady Buccaneers ending the night with an 84-49 victory.

Every team member scored at least three points for the Lady Statesmen each holding a portion of the score. But teamwork was how the game was played. The Lady Statesmen combined for 27 assists on the night.

Bug Cooper handed out 13 of those 27 assists.

“Bug is doing a great job for us,” head coach Sandra Rushing said. "She is leading the team well.”

Jamie Lack scored 14 points achieving a new career high. She was 2 for 2 from the free throw line and 6 for 12 from the floor.

The Lady Statesmen defense was stifling during the first half shutting down the Lady Buccaneers' offense. Nearly eight minutes passed before the Lady Buccaneers added to their score. During those eight minutes, the Lady Statesmen continued to pound the basket leading the Lady Buccaneers 24-4 with 12:16 left before the half.

The Lady Statesmen shot the ball a tremendous amount against the Lady Buccaneers shooting 50.7 percent from the floor for the night (34-67). They struggled a bit from behind the arch making only 33.3 percent of their three-pointers (5-15).

Looking to the difficult games a head, coach Rushing is keeping her team focused.

“You have to play every night, or you will find yourself at home in March,” said Rushing.

The Lady Statesmen head to the road for their next three contest. They will start with the University of Arkansas-Monticello Saturday, Jan. 29 at Steelman Field house. Then, they will take on Southern Arkansas University and Ouachita Baptist University completing the three road game stretch.
