MONTICELLO, ARK.- The Delta State Lady Statesmen (18-1, 6-1 GSC) laid a smack down on the Cotton Blossoms of Arkansas-Monticello (6-13, 2-5) beating them 76-55 Saturday, Jan. 29 at Steelman Field House.
Veronica Walker achieved her ninth double-double of the season scoring 20 points and rebounding 11 times in her 33 minutes of play. She was 7 of 13 from the floor and 6 for 10 from the free throw line.
Sheena Johnson had an outstanding game as well scoring 17 points and pulling in five rebounds, three of which were offensive. Johnson was 8 for 13 from the floor.
Bug Cooper dished out an amazing 14 assists nearly breaking her career record of 17. She ended the night with nine points and five rebounds.
The Lady Statesmen had a slow start in the beginning first half. But once they caught a rhythm, the ball fell and the score rose. Ending the half with a 36-29 lead over the Cotton Blossoms, the Lady Statesmen were 41.2 percent from the floor (14-34) and were an impressive 88.9 percent from behind the line (8-9).
Channon Haywood of UAM posed the biggest threat to the Lady Statesmen. She scored 18 points before the half. However, the Lady Statesmen made some adjustments in the second half that shut her down. After that, she only scored four more points ending the night with 22.
“We needed to make some adjustment regarding Channon Haywood, “head coach Sandra Rushing said. “I was pleased that we came out from the half and allowed her to score only four more points.”
The green-and-white shot 44.8 percent from the floor (26-58) for the night, but they struggled shooting from behind the arch. They were not able to make a single three. However, the Lady Statesmen made it up shooting a stellar 75 percent from behind the line (24-32).
The Lady Statesmen continue their three away game stretch against Southern Arkansas University Thursday, Feb. 3 at 5:30 p.m. in the W.T. Watson Center.
