Statesmen fall in conference opener to Huntsville 4-1

Box Score CLEVELAND—The Statesmen soccer team recognized five outgoing seniors prior to their Friday match with Alabama-Huntsville. The Statesmen took an early lead, but in the end, the Chargers used three second half goals to come away with the 4-1 victory.

The Statesmen (4-8, 0-1 GSC) scored the first goal of the match in the seventh minute. Sophomore midfielder Jonathon Boggus sent a beautiful pass to sophomore forward Eljay Allen, and Allen buried the ball into the back of the net. The goal was Allen's fourth of the season, and put the Statesmen out front.

The match remained a 1-0 affair for most of the opening half, until the 39th minute. Felix Hjalmarsson put the ball past junior keeper Flavio Romero to tie the game up at 1-1. Kyle Simmons assisted Hjalmarsson on the goal, and the match went into the halftime break tied at one.

The Chargers (8-3, 3-0 GSC) came out fast in the second half, and took the lead. In the 50th minute Hjalmarsson scored his second goal of the match this time assisted by Ragnar Gunnarson. Less than 10 minutes later the Chargers struck again. Mitchell Wilson scored, and Simmons picked up his second assist of the game.

Up 3-1, the Chargers put the game away in the 70th minute. Simmons scored an unassisted goal to cap off his big day. The goal put the Chargers up 4-1, which is where the match would stay.

Romero allowed four goals, and made six saves for the Statesmen. Huntsville outshot the Statesmen 17-13, and each team took six corner kicks in the match.

The referee made four bookings during the match. Sophomore defender Joe Stockglausner was booked with a yellow card in the 19th minute, and sophomore midfielder Daniel deBlaere was booked in the 73rd minute for the Statesmen. Jarrod Muggleton was booked in the 26th minute for the Chargers, and Brandon LeMier was booked in the 76th minute.  Delta State was whistled for 17 fouls during the match with Huntsville called for 12 fouls.

The Statesmen now look to rebound on Sunday as they host West Florida. The match is scheduled for 3:00 p.m., and will available on the Statesmen Sports Network.
