Box Score MEMPHIS, Tenn.—The Statesmen soccer team finished off their 2011 season by traveling to face No. 20 Christian Brothers. Powered by goals in the first half, the Bucs were able to come away with the 2-0 victory.
Christian Brothers (14-3, 5-0 GSC) took the lead in the 11th minute. Jose Ferraz scored for the Buccaneers, and was assisted on the goal by Alex Bermel. Christian Brothers struck again in the 32nd minute. Once again Ferraz found the back of the net, and he was assisted by Bermel, and by Yannick Skull on the goal.
Neither team scored in the second half, so Christian Brothers was able to gain the victory.
Junior goalkeeper
Flavio Romero allowed the two goals, and made seven saves for the Statesmen. Keeper Daniel Johnson made just one save, as he picked up the shutout win.
The Statesmen were outshot in the match 24-5. The Bucs put nine of their shots on goal, while the Statesmen put one shot on frame.
The Statesmen were booked three times in the match by the referee. Freshman midfielder
Reese Shaffer was shown a yellow in the 24th minute. Junior defender
Joe Stockglausner was given a yellow in the 53rd minute, and sophomore forward
Eljay Allen was booked in the 65th minute.
The Statesmen finish the 2011 season with a 5-12 overall record, and an 0-5 mark in GSC play. With the victory, Christian Brothers won their first regular season Gulf South Conference crown. The Bucs also completed their first ever perfect GSC season, as they won all five of their conference games.
