Box Score CLEVELAND-- The Lady Statesmen soccer team returned to Delta Field for the first time in a month, as they took on West Alabama Saturday afternoon. Unfortunately for the Lady Statesmen, the Lady Tigers capitalized on a second half goal, and came away with the 1-0 victory.
The match was competitive, as neither team scored in the opening 45 minutes. Both squads had opportunities in the first half, with West Alabama hitting the crossbar, but neither team found the back of the net.
The second half was a different story. In the 58th minute of play, Nicki Gears scored for the Lady Tigers off an assist from Vicky Petrova. The goal gave West Alabama (6-6, 1-2 GSC), the lead early in the second half.
With the game still at 1-0, the Lady Statesmen (2-8, 0-4 GSC), tried to find an equalizing goal. Junior midfielder
Michelle Laurenzi had a shot on goal late, but Tiger goal keeper Jess Martin made the save. The save helped the Lady Tigers escape with the 1-0 victory.
The Lady Tigers took 15 shots to the Lady Statesmen 10, but both teams put six shots on goal. Martin picked up the clean sheet making six saves along the way for West Alabama. Freshman goalkeeper
Kelsey Elling allowed one goal, and made five saves for the Lady Statesmen.
After dropping their last four matches, each by a 1-0 score, the Lady Statesmen will look to rebound when they take on Judson on Monday. The match will get underway in Marion, Ala. at 4:00 p.m. The Lady Statesmen will then come back home for Senior Day Friday, Oct. 14 when they take on Alabama Huntsville.
