Statesmen overcome deficit to defeat Henderson State 94-92

Box Score Arkadelphia, Ark.—The Statesmen basketball continued their road trip through Arkansas Monday night, as they took on Henderson State. While the Reddies were in control early, The Statesmen erased a 19-point deficit in the second half to come away with a 94-92 victory.

Henderson States (1-1) took control of the game the game from the tip-off, as they scored the first 13 points of the contest. The Reddies kept the offense going throughout the opening 20 minutes, and took a 48-37 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The Statesmen (2-1) were cold to start the game as they went scoreless for the first four minutes. They shot 44 percent as a team in the first half, and were 50 percent from three-point range in the opening half.

The second half started just like the first, as the Reddies opened up with a 10-to-2 run that extended their lead to 19 points. The Reddies continued to lead by double digits until there was under nine minutes left regulation.

That is when the Statesmen came to life, and continued to chip away at the Henderson State lead. The Statesmen tied the game up with 44 seconds to go in the contest. A tip-in by Henderson State with 24 seconds left gave them a two-point lead. Then Andrew Ensley fouled the Statesmen's Aaron Cooper to put him on the line with 16 seconds left. Fouling Cooper proved to be a bad decision through the game as Cooper hit his ninth and tenth free throws of the game. The free throws tied the game up at 92 with just seconds remaining.

Cooper's heroics were not done, as he grabbed rebound after Henderson State missed a lay up with seven seconds left. Cooper went down the floor and hit a jumper with two seconds left. The shot gave the Statesmen their first lead of the game at 94-92. The Reddies missed a last second shot, and the Statesmen came away with a hard fought 94-92 victory.

Cooper led all scorers, as he tallied 27 points. Cooper was 10-for-10 from the free throw line, and 8-of-16 from the field. The sophomore guard also grabbed six rebounds, dished out five assists, and stole the ball three times.

Junior forward Terry Leake Jr. also had a big night for the Statesmen. Leake finished with 23 points and nine rebounds. Senior forward Marqueys Brown was the third Statesmen in double figures as he scored 17 points to go along with five boards.

Ensley led the Reddies in scoring with 25 points. Denzel Lyles was right behind him with 21 points.

The Statesmen shot 52 percent from the field, and 53 percent from three-point range. Henderson State shot 44 percent for the game, and 39 percent from beyond the arc. The Statesmen made 19-of-25 free throws, and the Reddies made 17-of-25.

Delta State won the rebound battle grabbing 47 boards to the Reddies 33. That margin helped the Statesmen overcome 19 turnovers to only 13 for the Reddies.

The Statesmen will wrap up their road trip by playing Arkansas-Monticello Tuesday night. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. After tomorrow night the Statesmen will host Ouachita Baptist on Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
