Statesmen end road trip with loss to Arkansas-Monticello

Box Score MONTICELLO, Ark.—Fresh off a comeback victory over Henderson State, the Statesmen took the court Tuesday to face Arkansas-Monticello. The match-up was the first non-conference game between both teams since the 1994-95 season. Unfortunately for the Statesmen, the Boll Weevils controlled the game throughout, and came away with an 88-57 victory.

Monticello (4-1) started the game by scoring the first five points of the contest. They were off to the races from there, as they took a 20-point lead into the locker room at halftime. The Weevils shot 15-of-33 in the first half, and 4-of-11 from behind the three-point line.

The Statesmen (2-2) shot just 9-of-23 in the first half, and just 1-of-7 from three-point range. Senior center Marqueys Brown was on of three Statesmen to play the entire half, and he led the squad with eight points and five rebounds in the opening 20 minutes.

The second half was more of the same, as the Weevils extended their lead to as much as 36. The Statesmen shot better in the second half, but could not cut into the deficit, as Monticello rolled to the 88-457 win.

The Statesmen shot 48 percent from the floor in the second half, but shot just 2-of-15 from three-point range. Brown finished the game with a team-high 12 points. Sophomore guard Cornell Knight finished with 11, and was the only other Statesmen in double figures. Sophomore guard Aaron Cooper who led the team in scoring coming into the game, was held to just two points in 26 minutes of action. The Statesmen tuned the ball over 20 times in the game compared to just nine turnovers for Monticello.

L.A. Farmer led the Weevils in scoring, as he posted a game high 27 points. Kori Forge added 16 for Monticello. The Weevils shot 47 percent from the floor for the game, and were 33 percent from three-point range.

With their road trip now behind them, the Statesmen now return to Sillers Coliseum to face Ouachita Baptist on Saturday. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m., and it begins a two-game home stand for the Statesmen.
