Box Score CLEVELAND-Terry Leake hit a three point shot with 0.4 remaining on the clock to give the Delta State University Statesmen basketball team the 58-55 win, which was its second win over the Henderson State University Reddies in seven days Monday night at Sillers Coliseum.
HSU (1-2) led 56-53 with 27 seconds remaining before a
Marqueys Brown layup cut the lead to 56-55. Andrew Ensley was only able to make 1-of-2 from the free throw line to set up the dramatic shot by Leake.
The Statesmen (4-2) opened the game on a quick 13-6 spurt, but the Reddies quickly answered with solid defense en-route to a 13-0 run to take a 19-13 lead with 9:43 remaining in the half.
During the HSU run, the Statesmen went nearly six minutes without a bucket. The drought finally ended with an
Aaron Cooper three-pointer with 8:42 remaining in the half, making the score 19-16 in favor of the Reddies.
Defense prevailed for the remaining portion of the half, as HSU took a 27-24 lead to the locker room at halftime.
The former GSC rivals combined for 21 first half turnovers, as the Statesmen finished with 13 in the first 20 minutes.
Andrew Ensley lead all scorers in the first half with nine points for the Reddies, while Cooper's eight paced the Statesmen.
DSU finished with a poor 28.6 (8-of-28) shooting percentage. HSU did not fare much better, finishing 32.1 percent (9-of-28).
Strong defense and poor shooting from the floor continued for much of the early stages of the second half. It was that strong defense that helped the Statesmen to regain the lead at 35-34 on an
Aaron Cooper free throw with 10:35 remaining.
The two continued to go back and forth with neither team leading by more than five points in the second half. The Reddies lead the final 1:07 until the final shot by Leake.
Brown finished with a game high 16 points, including 12 in the second half. Ensley led the Reddies with 13.
DSU finished 19-of-53 (35.8) percent, while HSU finished 20-of-60 (33.3) percent. The Statesmen finished a solid 16-of-19 from the free throw stripe, while the Reddies were 13-of-23.
The Green-and-White will return to action on Sat. December 3 as they travel to Magnolia, Ark., to take on former GSC member Southern Arkansas University. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
