DECATUR, Ala.-After erupting for eight runs in the bottom of the fourth inning in a 9-1 win over Georgia College and State University, the Delta State University Lady Statesmen struck out 16 times in a 2-0 loss to Quincy on day one of the UAH Charger Chillout.
GSCU (2-9) opened the scoring in the top of the third with an RBI on a groundout by Kati Pickowitz.
The Lady Statesmen (3-3) tied it up in the same inning, with a sac-fly by
Lauren Lewis, scoring
Meagan Church.
The bottom of the fourth saw DSU explode for eight runs on eight hits.
Emily Todd led off the inning with a single, that was followed by an RBI triple to left field by
Maggie Jackson. Jackson was driven in on an RBI double by
Marisa Sanders.
Lauren Lewis picked up her second and third RBI's of the inning with a blast to left field, scoring Church and
Christina Hunter.
Todd and Jackson both had two each in the inning. Todd's second hit was her team leading third double of the season.
DSU finished with a season high 10 hits in the contest, while the Bobcats finished with five.
Victoria Combs (3-0) got the win for DSU. The freshman allowed one run, and struck out two.
Haley Burnett (0-4) took the loss. Burnett allowed eight runs, seven earned, on eight hits. Chelsie Huffman pitched in the bottom of the fourth and allowed one run on two hits.
Todd, Jackson and Church all finished with two hits each.
In game two, the young Lady Statesmen faced off against 2010 Third Team All-American Torie Bunzell.
Bunzell was spotted a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, and that's all she needed.
Monica Gray led off the game with a double to center field against DSU starter
Brittany Gonzales.
Gray scored on a throw to second on a stolen base attempt, and one batter later, pinch runner Samantha O'Brien scored on an RBI groundout by Ashleigh Roscetti.
The Lady Statesmen threatened in the bottom of the first, loading the bases with two outs. Hunter's groundball back to Bunzell was not enough to score Todd from third.
From that point on, each team only had one more hit in the game.
Bunzell held off the Lady Statesmen with a steady diet of riseballs, fastballs and change ups to hold off DSU hitters.
Pinch hitters
Caroline Womack and
Katie Hebert both reached base with two outs in the seventh, but Bunzell recorded her 16th strikeout of the game to finish off DSU.
Bunzell (1-0) allowed two hits with her 16 strikeouts.
Gonzales (0-2) was nearly as spectacular, allowing two hits as well, with eight strikeouts.
The Lady Statesmen will return to action at the Charger Chillout Saturday to take on Augusta State University. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30.
DSU is also scheduled to take on Barry University at 4:30 in game two.
