Lady Statesmen allow 23 hits in two game sweep at UAH Charger Chillout

DECATUR, Ala.-The Delta State University Lady Statesmen softball team allowed 24 hits over two games, falling 6-2 to Augusta State and 8-5 to Barry in the nightcap, Saturday at Wilson Morgan Park.

In game one, the Lady Statesmen (3-5) had their chances, loading the bases with only one out, before ASU pitcher Laura Brown retired Megan Church and Christina Hunter.

With the game tied at 1-1 in the top of the third, Raina Stiffler drove in Church with an RBI triple.

The Jaguars (5-3) tied the game in the bottom half of the inning, and scored one run in both the forth and fifth innings, before plating two more insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Trailing 6-2 in the bottom of the top of the seventh, the Lady Statesmen loaded the bases with one out.

Heather Hughes induced a pair of groundouts to preserve the win for DSU.

Brittany Gonzales (0-3) took the hard luck loss, tossing five innings. The sophomore allowed four runs, three earned, on seven hits.

Sara Davis also allowed a pair of unearned runs in relief in the sixth, before Katie Hebert retired the side.

Brown picked up the win for ASU, the righty allowed two unearned runs on six hits in five innings. Hughes earned the six out save for the Jaguars.

Jessica Thornton 2-for-2 was the only ASU player with multiple hits, while Emily Todd, Stiffler and Lauren Lewis all had two hits for DSU.

The Lady Statesmen outhit ASU 10-9.

In game two, Barry (3-3) jumped on DSU starter Victoria Combs for three runs in the top of the first inning, collecting four hits in the process.

However, the Lady Statesmen quickly struck back for two runs in the bottom of the first inning with a two RBI double by Marisa Sanders that scored Crista Richard and Maggie Jackson.

Down 4-2 in the bottom of the second, DSU erupted for a three spot in the inning, taking a 5-4 lead.

Richard and Todd had RBI each had RBI hits in the inning.

The Bucs responded in a big way. Trailing 5-4, in the top of the fourth, Jessica Tabor picked up two of her four RBI with one of her two doubles in the game, to put BU up 6-5.

Alyssa Goldsmith knocked in a pair of runs in the top of the fifth with a two out single, giving Barry the 8-5 lead.

Combs (3-1) took the loss. The freshman went all seven, allowing eight runs, seven earned, on 14 hits.

Jessica Bevlin (2-1) picked up the win in relief. Bevlin went 5.2 innings, allowed three hits and struck out seven.

The Lady Statesmen will return to action Sunday at 1 p.m. to take on Maryville (MO).

In game two, DSU will finish the UAH Charger Chillout with a contest against Lambuth.
