MEMPHIS, TN- Moe Bell became the 33rd Lady Statesmen to join the 1,000-point club Thursday, Feb. 24 as Delta State (23-2, 11-2 GSC) defeated Christian Brothers University (8-17, 1-12 GSC) 60-44 in Canale Arena.
On her 273rd three-point shot, Bell joined her fellow teammates,
Veronica Walker and Bug Cooper, in reaching the 1,000-point milestone.
“I am very proud of Moe,” said head coach Sandra Rushing. “We struggled to get her a shot; but she finally got it and I am so proud.”
The Lady Statesmen did struggle finding a lasting offensive rhythm.
The first half got off to a slow start as they made 11 of 28 from the field (39.3 percent). However, the Lady Statesmen took care of business underneath the basket; they outrebounded the Lady Bucs 21-13 in the first period. In spite of the slow start, DSU went into half 26-16 over CBU.
“You can't come out lackadaisical like we did,” said Rushing. “The last few ball games we have not listened, and this has to be fixed.”
In the second half,
Veronica Walker took control. She had 18 halftime points putting her at 22 for the night along with 12 rebounds. This is Walker's fourteen double-double of the season.
The players off the bench also stole the attention of the crowd.
Aubree Ray,
Jessica Brown,
Amber Powe and
Brooke Rhodes had a tremendous night for the statesmen. In all, the Lady Statesmen bench scored 28 total points.
“I am so proud of our bench and what they are able to do,” said Rushing. “I am so excited about them.”
After a much-improved second half, Delta State ended the night 46 percent from the field (29-63) and 25 percent from the three-point line (3-12). They also shot 62.5 percent from the line (5-8). The Green-and-white continued to dominate under the basket, finishing with 48 rebounds—20 were offensive.
The Lady Statesmen wrap up the regular season with a conference matchup against Arkansas-Monticello at Sillers Coliseum on Saturday, Feb at 4 p.m. Saturday, Delta State will celebrate senior night.
