Lady Statesmen hit their way to sweep over Miles

Maggie Jackson and the Lady Statesmen swept Miles on Saturday
CLEVELAND, Miss.-The Delta State University Lady Statesmen softball team pounded 20 hits in a two game sweep, 10-0 and 7-5 over Miles College Saturday at University Field.

The Lady Statesmen (6-6) jumped on top 3-0 in the first inning of game one, using RBI's by Maggie Jackson, Marisa Sanders and Christina Hunter.

DSU did not score again until the third inning, but made it count, erupting for seven runs. The Lady Statesmen batted around in the inning, and recorded five hits. Hunter and Emily Todd each had RBI base hits in the big inning.

Freshman Victoria Combs held the Bears (2-8) to only two hits in the five inning game. Terri Roberts and Brianna Barrentine recorded the hits for MC.

Todd, Jackson and Hunter were each 2-for-3 in the contest.

Combs (4-2) went all five innings for the win. She did not walk a hitter, and recorded a pair of strikeouts.

Valerie Pena took the loss for MC. Pena allowed ten runs, only four of which were earned. Heather Mitchell pitched 2.1 innings of relief and allowed only two hits.

In game two, the Lady Statesmen jumped ahead 2-0 in the second inning, taking advantage of two Bears errors and an RBI groundout by Lauren Lewis.

With a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth, DSU pushed across four runs to take a commanding 7-0 lead, but as would turn out, the Lady Statesmen needed almost all seven.

Taylor Hughes and Victoria Combs each had RBI hits in the inning, while Jackson had a two-RBI double.

In the top of the fifth, with Sara Davis in relief for starter Brittany Gonzales, Davis allowed a lead-off homerun to Brittney Mitchell. The Bears scored their second run of the game in the sixth with a sac-fly by Val Pena, making the score 7-2.

With two outs in the top of the seventh, following a sac-fly, Terri Roberts put a scare into the home crowd with a two RBI triple to right field, making the score 7-5.

Gonzales reentered the game, and induced a groundout to Kendra Ward to preserve the game for DSU.

Crista Richard finished 2-for-4, and Jackson finished 3-for-4 with two RBI's and a pair of runs scored.

Roberts finished 3-for-4 for MC.

Gonzales (1-3) got the win for DSU. The sophomore worked 4.1 innings and allowed four hits, with four strikeouts. Davis allowed five runs on five hits in 2.2 innings of work.

The Lady Statesmen return to action on Tuesday March, 1 for a doubleheader with Belhaven University. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
