Lady Statesmen fail to get clutch hit in doubleheader loss to OBU

ARKADELPHIA, Ark.-The Delta State University Lady Statesmen softball team took an early lead in both games, but failed to get clutch hits in a doubleheader loss Sunday at Sully Anderson Field.

The Lady Tigers (9-10, 4-0) won the first game 6-4, and took the second game 4-2.

After being shut out on Saturday, the Lady Statesmen (9-15, 1-7) struck in the top of the first of game one with a Marisa Sanders RBI base hit that scored Emily Todd from third base.

OBU finally solved the riddle of DSU starting pitcher Brittany Gonzales in the bottom of the fourth, scoring two runs on a pair of doubles by Bailey Sanders and Rebekah Dindak.

The Tigers added three more in the next inning on back-to-back home runs by Sarah Bell and Kristen Rigsbee, with the later coming against relief pitcher Katie Hebert.

Down 6-1 in the top of the seventh, the Lady Statesmen took advantage of three Lady Tiger errors, and three base hits to bring the score to 6-4.

Following RBI hits by Sanders and Victoria Combs, relief pitcher Abbi Frakes struck out Maggie Jackson and Lauren Lewis with runners on second and third to end the game.

Sanders and Combs each had two hits in game one. Crista Richard and Taylor Hughes had the others.

Gonzales (2-8) took the loss, allowing four runs on six hits. Hebert allowed two runs on three hits in 1.1 innings of relief. Sara Davis also faced one hitter, which she retired.

Rigsbee (3-5) worked 6.1 innings for the win, and allowed four runs (one earned) on six hits.

In game two, a two RBI single with two outs by Christina Hunter gave the Lady Statesmen a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning.

In the bottom of the third, the Lady Tigers took advantage of a pair of DSU errors to tie the game at 2-2.

OBU added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings.

The Lady Statesmen did not record a hit in the final three innings of play.

Combs (6-5) took the loss for the Lady Statesmen. Frakes (2-3) earned the win for OBU.

No DSU player had multiple hits in game two.

The Lady Statesmen return to action Saturday, March 26 in Wichita Falls, Texas, as they will begin play in the MSU Invitational II.
