DSU shut out in final day of MSU Invitational

WICHITA FALLS, Texas-For the second straight day, the Delta State University Lady Statesmen were swept at the MSU Invitational, falling 8-0 to St. Edward's in game one and 10-0 to host Midwestern State.

Both contests were ended early by the mercy rule.

In game one, the Lady Statesmen appeared to be started in the right direction, with a bases loaded rally.

However, SEU starter Paige Sandahl induced a two out popup to the shortstop by Angela Carden to end the threat.

SEU (20-14) took a 2-0 lead in the second inning, with a pair of unearned runs following an error. Meagan Bailey made the Lady Statesmen pay for the error with a two out tripe to right field.

The Hilltoppers added three more runs in the fourth and fifth innings to finish the game.

Sandahl (9-6) held DSU (9-19) to only three hits in the contest. Marisa Sanders finished 2-for-3 with a double. Emily Todd added the other hit for the Lady Statesmen.

Brittany Gonzales (2-10) took the loss for DSU, allowing five runs (three earned) on three hits. Sara Davis allowed three runs in 0.2 innings of relief. Victoria Combs also helped, recording one out in relief work.

Bailey and Lauren Brode finished with five-of-seven RBI's for SEU.

No. 3 ranked MSU (29-3) jumped ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the first, when Elena Bennett, who walked and stole second base was driven home by Nicki Duff.

The Lady Statesmen threatened in the top of third, when Crista Richard doubled down the left field line, advancing Lauren Lewis to third.

Pitcher Kristina Gutierrez forced two straight fly outs by Taylor Hughes and Todd.

The Mustangs jumped ahead 5-0 in the fourth inning with a pair of two-run homeruns. One coming off the bat of Amanda Potysman, while the other came from Carey Campbell. The first homerun came against Gonzales, while the second was tagged against Combs.

After adding a single run in the fifth, All-American candidate catcher Kim Jerrick ended the game with a grand slam against Davis.

DSU finished with three hits in the contest. Angela Carden finished with a double, while Todd also had a hit.

Gonzales (2-11) took the loss. She allowed four runs on three hits in 3.1 innings, while Combs allowed two runs on four hits in 1.1 innings.

Davis allowed four runs on three hits in 0.2 innings.

The Lady Statesmen will return to University Field on Tuesday, March 29 for a 6 p.m. single game against Mississippi Valley State.
