Lady Statesmen stop losing streak in GSC split with CBU

Sophomore Brittany Gonzales pitched all nine innings in the game one win
CLEVELAND-The Delta State University Lady Statesmen snapped a 10 game losing streak with a split versus Christian Brothers in Gulf South Conference action Saturday at University Field.

The Lady Statesmen took game one in dramatic fashion, 3-2 in nine innings, before being shutout 3-0 in game two.

DSU (10-21, 2-8) scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the third, with a two out double by Victoria Combs that scored Taylor Hughes.

CBU (8-17, 2-10) tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the fifth with a solo homer by leadoff hitter Kathleen Nelson.

Angela Carden delivered another two out rbi in the bottom of the fifth with a base hit to center field, scoring Hughes.

Not wanting to go away, the Lady Bucs would again tie the game, this time at 2-2, in the top of the sixth with an RBI double by Kaylea Brewer.

Gonzales toughened up in the top of the seventh, when CBU loaded the bases with two outs, the sophomore struck out Emily Schmidt to finish a nine pitch at-bat.

Neither team threatened again until the bottom of the ninth, when Hughes led off the inning with a base hit to right. With one out, Combs reached on a single down the left field line. Maggie Jackson then recorded her first hit of the game to load the bases.

Carden slammed a base hit over the head of Nelson, scoring Emily Todd to give DSU the win. The walk-off hit was the second of the season for Carden.

Gonzales (3-12) went the distance for the Lady Statesmen, allowing two runs on nine hits. The sophomore recorded a season high nine strikeouts.

Brewer (4-7) took the loss in relief of starter Michelle McEachron.

Casey King, Marie Joiner and Brewer each had two hits for CBU.

Crista Richard, Hughes, Todd, Combs and Carden each had two hits for DSU. The Lady Statesmen had 12 hits in the contest.

Game two proved to be vastly different, as the Lady Statesmen were held to only 4 hits in the shutout loss.

The Lady Bucs strung together three straight hits in the top of the second off DSU starter Combs. The inning was capped off by an RBI double by Schmidt.

With a 1-0 lead in the top of the third, Nelson hit her second homer of the day, giving CBU a 2-0 lead. Brewer gave CBU its final runs of the game, knocking a double to right center field that scored Jessica Ambers.

The Lady Statesmen bats were held in check by freshman left hander Kim Adams. Adams (3-7) picked up the win in five innings of work. McEachron picked up the six out save, and allowed only one hit.

Todd, Carden, Combs and Lauren Lewis had the hits for DSU.

Combs (6-8) took the loss, allowing three runs (two earned) in two innings of work. Gonzales worked two innings, allowing one hit. Sara Davis pitched three innings of relief, and allowed only one hit.

The series will conclude on Sunday with a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
