MONTICELLO, Ark.-The University of Arkansas at Monticello Cotton Blossoms pounded 16 hits in a two game sweep of the Delta State University Lady Statesmen 3-1 and 8-3, Friday at Blossoms Field.

DSU (20-30, 11-17) jumped ahead 1-0 in the top of the first against UAM All-American starting pitcher Kayla Jackson, when Lauren Lewis scored from third on a delayed double steal.

Combs (10-12) was saddled with the tough luck loss. The freshman allowed three runs on six hits with four walks and four strikeouts.

Jackson (21-5) allowed one run on five hits.

In game two, UAM starter Amanda Nordberg kept the DSU hitters off balance, as she did not allow a DSU hit until the fourth inning, when Marisa Sanders smacked a line drive off the top of the left field fence.

As in game one, the Cotton Blossoms opened their scoring in the bottom of the third, using a two RBI triple with two outs by Hayslip. Perry followed with a double to give UAM the 3-0 lead.

The Cotton Blossoms extended the lead to 8-2 in the bottom of the sixth, with an RBI groundout by Jackson, and an RBI hit by Hayslip.

The two teams will finish their regular seasons on Friday with a doubleheader beginning at noon.

DSU will have an eye on the GSC series between rivals Ouachita Baptist and Henderson State. If Henderson State finishes with the same amount of GSC wins as DSU, then the Lady Statesmen would miss their first ever GSC Tournament.
