Box Score BATESVILLE, Ark.—The Statesmen soccer team will no longer have a “0” in the left side of their record column as they picked up their first win of the season Tuesday. The Statesmen never trailed as they beat Lyon College 3-1 in Batesville.
Freshman forward Stetson Chamberlin scored the first goal of the game, which gave the Statesmen (1-6), the early advantage. Freshman midfielder
Taylor Whyte added to the Statesmen's lead in the first half with a goal in the 24th minute.
Lyon (3-4) got back into the match in the second half. Serhly Zhykin put the ball into the back of the net for the Scots in the 76th minute. The Statesmen answered quickly to put the game away. Sophomore forward
Eljay Allen scored in the 78th minute, and that is all the Statesmen would need to hold on to the victory.
Delta State outshot the Scots 7-6 for the match. Junior goalkeeper
Flavio Romero was unavailable for the Statesmen due to a red card in last week's match versus Harding. Freshman
Sebastian Simota stepped into net for Statesmen, and he made five saves while picking up his first collegiate victory.
The Statesmen now get a well-deserved break after a hectic start to their season. The Statesmen will take the pitch at Delta Field on Sept. 27 against Christian Brothers University in a non-conference match. The match gets underway at 4 p.m., and it is available on the Statesmen Radio Network.
