Statesmen defeat Christian Brothers in wild match

Box Score CLEVELAND—Those who were in attendance to see the Statesmen soccer team take on Christian Brothers University Wednesday afternoon were treated to an exciting match. The Statesmen were able to pull out the 2-1 victory over the buccaneers on a late goal to win their second straight match.

Christian Brothers (6-3) struck first in the opening half. Statesmen freshman goalkeeper Sebastian Simota was trying to clear the ball, but his kick was deflected by Jose Ferraz. Ferraz was then able to gather the ball and put it into the back of the net, which gave CBU the lead in the 6th minute.

The Statesmen (2-6) kept the deficit at one for most of the first half before they were able to equalize the match. Senior forward Tom Santos flicked the ball passed the CBU defensive line, and found sophomore forward Eljay Allen on the other end. Allen then beat the defenders in a foot race, and put the ball past Buccaneer goalkeeper Jamie Garcia to knot the match up at 1-1 in the 33rd minute.

The match remained a 1-1 tie throughout the second half. Christian Brothers had multiple chances off of corner kicks, but the Statesmen defended them all. Then with under a minute left, Garcia was whistled for a foul, which gave Delta State a free kick at the corner of the box.

Simmons took the kick, and put the ball on the ground toward the goal. The ball deflected around until sophomore defender Joe Stockglausner got a hold of it and scored the game-winning goal for the Statesmen with just seconds left.

Even with the early goal, Simota played well for the Statesmen. He made nine saves, and faced 17 CBU shots. Christian Brothers held a big corner kick advantage taking 11 to the Statesmen's five.

Cards were plentiful in the match, as both sides were booked by the referee. Frasier Pain received his yellow card for the Statesmen in the 21st minute. Ralph Velasco picked up CBU's first yellow in the 26th. Matt Derise was booked for CBU in the 43rd minute, and a yellow card was given to the head coach of the Buccaneers Clint Browne in the 89th minute. Two players were sent off with red cards. Stetson Chamberlin was sent off in the 90th minute, and will not be able to play in the Statesmen's next match. Sean Rutter was also sent off in the 90th minute, and will not be available to CBU in their next match.

This match will not count as a Gulf South Conference game. The Statesmen and the Buccaneers will meet again for conference play Oct. 29 in Memphis, Tenn. Up next for the Statesmen is a road trip to Talladega, Ala. The Statesmen will take on Talladega College this Friday, Sept 30 at 3:00 p.m.
