Box Score CLEVELAND—The Lady Statesmen wrapped up their first home conference weekend of the season, as they played host to the West Alabama Tigers. After a slow start to the game, the Lady Statesmen grabbed control in the first half and rolled to a 64-44 victory. The win was the third straight for the Lady Statesmen.
West Alabama (6-8, 1-2 GSC) took an early lead as Danielle Cole scored the first basket of the game. Senior forward
Veronica Walker put in the first bucket for the Lady Statesmen to tie the game at two. The two teams traded baskets before the Lady Statesmen went on a run. The Lady Statesmen closed out the half on a 27-13 run to take a 33-20 lead into the halftime break.
Walker lead all scorers in the first half with 11 points, as the Lady Statesmen shot 48 percent from the field in the first half. The Tigers missed a few shots in close and shot 35 percent from the floor. Both teams turned the ball over in the first half with the Lady Statesmen committing eight compared to six for the Tigers. The Lady Statesmen won the battle on the boards pulling down 22 in the opening half, with West Alabama grabbing 12.
The second half was more of the same for the Lady Statesmen, as they never let the Tigers get too close. The Lady Statesmen outscored West Alabama in the second half 31-24. Walker led all scorers in the game with 17 points. She also grabbed 10 rebounds for the double-double. Sophomore guard
Brooke Rhodes added 11 points as did freshman forward
Seneca Walton.
The Lady Statesmen (8-4, 2-1 GSC) shot 43 percent for the game, and went 3-for-7 from the three-point line. West Alabama shot 36 percent for the game, and was 1-of-7 from three-point range. Delta State out rebounded West Alabama 42-28.
The Lady Statesmen will take the floor at Sillers Coliseum for their next game against The University of Alabama-Huntsville. Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 19.
