Lady Statesmen use strong defense in win over Lions

FLORENCE, Ala. - The Delta State University Lady Statesmen started the contest on a 13-2 run and never looked back against the University of North Alabama Lions pulling away for a 67-45 win at Flowers Hall on Saturday.

The Lady Statesmen (11-4, 5-1 GSC) started the game with a 13 to 2 run in the first six minutes of play, but the Lions (10-7, 2-4 GSC) climbed their way back into the game capitalizing off of 10 DSU first-half turnovers, bringing UNA to within 15-12 at the 8:52 mark. That proved to be as close as the Lions would get to the Lady Statesmen.

DSU pushed in a late 12-4 run to close out the first-half with a 27-16 lead.  The 16 points proved to be the purple and gold's lowest first-half point total on the year.

Senior, Veronica Walker led the way for the green and white in the first-half posting 11 points and five rebounds. Aubree Ray followed up Walker's first-half performance with four points and five rebounds.

Nichelle Fillmore and Jasmine Horne led the way for the Lions in the first-half putting in six points apiece.

DSU and UNA started the second-half trading buckets, but the Lady Statesmen extended their lead to 45-24 on an 11 to 4 run with 11:39 remaining in the contest.

Walker led the way for the Lady Statesmen posting 29 points and eight rebounds on the day. Brooke Rhodes finished the game putting in nine points going 2 for 3 from three point range. Ray chipped in eight points and five boards and Seneca Walton finished the day with a solid seven points and a career best 10 rebounds in the contest.

UNA placed three players in double figures, with solid performances by Nichelle Fillmore (14 points and 10 rebounds), Lacy Lewis (11 points) and Jasmine Horne (10 points).

The Lady Statesmen will return to action on Tuesday, Jan. 24 against the University of New Orleans with the tip-off set for 4:30 p.m. at Lakefront Arena.
