Statesmen turnovers costly in loss to Buccaneers

Box Score MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Delta State University Statesmen gave up a total 21 turnovers which proved to be costly in a 75-49 loss on the road against the hot shooting of the Christian Brothers University Buccaneers at Canale Arena, Saturday.

The Statesmen would be out shot by the Buccaneers in the first-half of play with DSU connecting on just 8-of-23 (.348) from the floor while CBU went 13-for-26 (.500). Eight turnovers would set the Statesmen back against the Buccaneers trailing 31-19 at the end of the first-half.

Marqueys Brown led the Statesmen in the first-half of play with eight points and teammate Terry Leake posted five first half points going 2-for-5 from the floor. Cornell Knight, Ryan Smith, and Arthur Jackson would each contribute two first-half points for the green and white.

Christian Brothers, Dennis Scott led the way putting in 11 points shooting 4-of-8 from the field and collecting five rebounds. Scott was followed by teammate Zack Warner who pitched in eight first-half points for CBU.

The Buccaneers opened up the second-half with an 11-2 run led by a pair Cory McArthy three-pointers to extend the CBU lead over DSU to 42-21 at the 15:11 mark.

DSU would turn the ball over 21 times on the night and CBU would capitalize and covert those turnovers into 20 points. The Buccaneers continued to stay hot on the offensive end finishing the night 28-for-55 (.509).

The Statesmen were led by Leake who tallied 13 points and six rebounds. Brown, Knight, and Aaron Cooper all posted nine points for DSU.
Scott for the Buccaneers led all scorers on the night with 18 points 6-of-11 (.545) and grabbed seven rebounds. Warner finished the night
with 15 points and five rebounds. Trey Casey would contribute 10 points shooting 5-for-8 from the floor.

The Statesmen will return to Sillers Coliseum next week for a pair of home games against Gulf South Conference opponents Valdosta State University (2.2/ 8 p.m.) and the University of West Florida (2.4/ 6 p.m.)
