Box Score MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Delta State University Lady Statesmen won the rebound battle 40-to-25 en route to a 57-44 victory on the road against the Christian Brothers University Lady Buccaneers at Canale Arena, Saturday.
The Lady Statesmen (13-4, 6-1 GSC) started the game on a 10-to-2 run that was capped off by a
Brooke Rhodes steal and fast-break layup at the 16:59 mark.
The Lady Buccaneers (5-14, 2-5 GSC) capitalized by converting eight points off of seven Lady Statesmen turnovers to try to stay close despite being out rebounded 26-to-13. The green and white put together an 11-to-4 run to end the first-half leading the CBU 33-19.
Rhodes for DSU led all scorers with 11 points shooting 3-for-9 (33%) from the floor.
Veronica Walker followed Rhodes' first-half performance with 10 points and five rebounds.
Denesha Henderson had a solid first-half performance posting seven points and 10 rebounds.
Amber Williams led the way for CBU putting up six points and gathering four rebounds, while Aramis Judson posted five first-half points. Jasmine Ellis and Adrienne McKay each chipped in four points for the Lady Buccaneers.
DSU came out in the second-half scoring on two
Veronica Walker free-throws but would not find their first field goal of the half until the 16:58 mark. CBU looked to close the gap against the Lady Statesmen during that time going on a 7-to-2 run closing the gap to 37-26.
Henderson would record her first career double-double against the Lady Buccanneers posting 11 points and a career-high 10 rebounds. Walker led the Lady Statesmen in scoring with 15 points and gathered nine rebounds and Rhodes followed up her teammates performances with 14 points 4-of-4 from the free-throw line.
Ellis led the way for CBU putting in 11 points 4-of-9 from the floor, while teammates Judson and Sarah Combs posted 7 points apiece. Williams and Jessica Green also chipped in six points each for the Lady Buccaneers.
The Lady Statesmen return to Sillers Coliseum on Feb. 2 to take on Valdosta State University at 6:00 p.m. and will welcome the University of West Florida on Saturday, Feb. 4, tip-off scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
