Statesmen can't overcome quick start from Shorter, fall 6-3

Box Score ROME, Ga. - The Delta State University soccer team couldn't overcome a quick start from Shrter and fell to the Hawks 6-3 Friday afternoon.

Shorter (3-8-1, 2-6-0 GSC) got off to a quick start with three goals in the first half, two of which came in the first 11:16 of the match, helping the Hawks to a 3-0 lead at the halftime break.

The Statesmen (5-7-1, 2-5-0 GSC) got things rolling in the second half, scoring a pair of goals 1:12 apart. Sebastian Ridout scored to put the Statesmen on the scoreboard. Daniel Deblaere picked up an assist on the goal.

Just over a minute later, Caue Da Silva scored his 10th goal of the season on an unassisted play. Da Silva's goal tied the freshman for the most goals in a season in Statesmen history, matching a feat that has been completed three times.

Despite the quick goals from Delta State, Shorter failed to lose momentum and the Hawks scored four minutes later to go up 4-2.

The game became out of reach just 40 seconds later, as the Statesmen give up an own goal which gave Shorter a 5-2.

Jonathan Boggus scored for the Statesmen 48 seconds after that, but it was the closest the Statesmen got back to the Hawks.

Shorter added a late goal to seasl up a 6-3 victory.

The Statesmen will look to rebound in a key conference match Sunday at Alabama-Huntsville. Delta State holds a 4 point lead over the Chargers for the fourth and final spot in the GSC Tournament picture.
