Statesmen fall in overtime to CBU

Box Score CLEVELAND - The Delta State Staetsmen soccer team fell to Christian Brothers on Sunday by way of a pair of a header in overtime, spoiling senior day for the Green-and-White.

Christian Brothers (9-7-1, 8-7-1 GSC) took advantage of a pair of throw-ins and scored with three minutes remaining in regulation, before adding another goal with just 16 seconds remaining in the first overtime session to win the match.

All three goals came off throw-ins. The Statesmen (7-10-1, 4-8-0 GSC) took the lead when Daniel Deblaere scored in the 62nd minute. The play started with a throw-in by Jaxon Lambert from the right side of the field. Jack Pilley headed the ball on to Deblaere, who scored his fourth goal of the season from the left side of the box.

With three minutes remaining in the match, a long throw-in from CBU's Samuel Wilson was mishandled by Milos Boskovic and Adamandios Toras knocked the dropped ball into the net to tie the game at 1-1.

With under 20 seconds remaining in the first overtime session, Wilson again put a long throw into the box and David Skull headed the ball past Boskovic for the winner.

The loss was the third overtime loss for the Statesmen in 2012. In the last match, West Florida defeated the Statesmen at Delta Field with less than a minute remaining in double overtime. Ouachita Baptist also defeated the Statesmen in overtime at Delta Field. The Statesmen tied Harding in Searcy, Ark. in the Statesmen's only other overtime match this season.

The Statesmen will now head onto the Gulf South Conference Tournament this week. The Statesmen, the No. 4 seed in the tournament will take on West Florida, the No.1 seed, at 11 a.m. on Friday in Pensacola, Fla.
