Box Score JACKSON, Tenn. – The No. 10 ranked Clayton State University Lakers outscored the Delta State University Lady Statesmen 37-22 in the second half en route to a 68-51 win, Friday, Nov. 16 at the Union University Lady Bulldog Classic.
The Lady Statesmen (1-1) led for a majority of the closely contested first half, in which neither team had more than a three-point lead.
CSU (1-0) outscored DSU 7-2 over the final 2:42 of the half to take a 31-29 lead into halftime
Seneca Walton led all scorers with 12 first half points, while Drameka Griggs paced CSU with nine.
Each team finished the half strong from the floor, as CSU was 13-of-31 (41.9), while the Lady Statesmen were 10-of-25 (40.0) at the end of the opening half.
The Lakers held DSU to only two points in a five-minute span in the middle of the second half, jumping out to a 49-39 lead with 6:32 remaining. DSU did not get any closer, as CSU finished the game with a 19-12 run to close out the Lady Statesmen.
CSU used a stifling pressure defense to force 26 Green-and-White turnovers, including 14 in the second half.
Griggs added nine more second half points to finish with a game-high 18.
Chelsey Rhodes led DSU with 15. Walton also had a double digit scoring output, as she finished with 15.
Rhandi Ball had a game-high 11 rebounds for the Lady Statesmen, who outrebounded the Lakers 40-32.
DSU struggled in the second half from the floor, going only 7-of-27 (25.9), to finish 17-of-52 (32.7) The Lakers shot 15-of-29 (51.7) over the final 20 minutes to finish 28-of-60 (46.7)
The Lady Statesmen will finish its 2012 Union University Lady Bulldog Classic on Saturday, Nov. 17 at 2 p.m. with a matchup with the Brevard College Tornados. The game marks the first meeting all-time between the two schools.
