The win also marked the first for head coach
Jim Boone while at the helm of the Green-and-White.
The Magicians (1-1) pressured hard and fast from the opening tip, forcing the Statesmen (1-1) to turn the ball over four times in the opening minutes of the contest.
With three ties and three lead changes in the first half, Delta State managed the pressure early on from LeMoyne Owen to keep the game close until
Cornel Knight nailed a jumper in the lane putting the Statesmen ahead 16-15 at the 9:44 mark. From the point on the Statesmen would not relinquish the lead.
The Green-and-White extended the lead to 33-23 on a
Jack Madgen layup with 1:46 remaining, giving DSU their largest lead of the night. The Magicians managed to cut into the lead on a three-pointer by Brandon Hopson closing the gap to 35-28 at the half.
Knight led the Green-and-White in the first half posting 10 points while Leake, Jr. followed up with nine points and three rebounds.
Lamanda Williams led all scorers in the first half posting 12 points and five rebounds and Shad O'Garro tossed in nine points for the Magicians.
The Statesmen reeled off a 14-2 run coming out of the locker room with the help of back-to-back three-pointers by Madgen building the lead to 49-30 with 16:14 on the clock. Leake, Jr. tacked on a bucket after a missed jumper by the Magicians on the next possession, expanding the gap in the score to 51-30.
LeMoyne Owen tracked down the Statesmen with a 16-4 run, cutting the lead to 59-49 on a Williams three-pointer with 7:46 remaining and did not get any closer until the closing minute when it was too late.
Delta State finished the night shooting 23-of-48 (47.9%) from the floor and racking up a total of 51 rebounds compared to the LeMoyne Owen's 22-of-55 (40.0%) from the floor and 29 rebounds.
Leake, Jr. led the Statesmen with 22 points and six rebounds, while Knight finished with 15 points and seven rebounds and Madgen tossed in 14 points and six rebounds.
Williams finished the night with 22 points for the Magicians while teammates O'Garro and Brandon Hopson contributed 14 and 11 points respectively.
