No. 10 Bucs escape Sillers Coliseum with 58-53 win over Statesmen

Box Score CLEVELAND, Miss. – No. 10 Christian Brothers University (4-1, 1-0 GSC) edged Delta State University (2-3, 0-1 GSC) 58-53 Saturday, Dec. 1 in the Gulf South Conference opener for both teams at Walter Sillers Coliseum.  The Buccaneers, who led by as many as 11 points with 13:37 to play, finished the game shooting 41.3 percent from field on 19-of-46 attempts, while the Statesmen were 20-of-43 from the floor for 46.5 percent.  Both teams made five 3-pointers, but the Statesmen managed just 8-of-18 at the free throw line in the loss. 

The Statesmen had cut the Bucs lead to four points with 1:08 to play, but the Bucs never gave the Green-and-White an opportunity to put the ball in the basket.  DSU's Leake, Jr., missed a 3-point attempt with 34.3 seconds left, but the Statesmen turned it over on their last two possessions to ice the victory for CBU. 

Christian Brothers placed three players in double figures, led by the 11 points of Pat Graham and Trey Casey.  Sidy Sall added 10 points and seven rebounds. 

The Statesmen were led by Terry Leake, Jr.'s 17 points and nine rebounds.  Jack Madgen added 13 points and Cornel Knight had 12 points, six rebounds and five assists.   

The Buccaneers of Christian Brothers held an eight-point halftime lead, 33-25, over the Statesmen of Delta State after shooting 47.6 percent in the first half and connecting on 10-of-15 free throw attempts.  The Statesmen hit 45.5 percent from the field, but were a miserable 3-of-10 at the free throw line at the break.  CBU's bench was the difference in the half, as the reserves outscored DSU's 10-3. 

Pat Graham led the Buccaneers with eight points at the half, while Terry Leake, Jr., led DSU and all scorers with nine. 

The Statesmen return to the court on Saturday, Dec. 8 at Miles College.  Tipoff is set for 3 p.m. in Birmingham, Ala.  DSU will not play again at home until Dec. 19 versus Selma University.
