Box Score TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Delta State University Lady Statesmen Basketball team raced out to a 12-2 lead to open the game and pulled away for a 64-37 victory over Stillman College, Saturday at Birthright Gym.
The victory was the second this season for the Lady Statesmen (6-1) over the Tigers (1-8).
Stillman used a 7-2 run of its on to cut the deficit to 14-9 with a free throw by Ashante Brown with 9:31 left in the half. DSU responded with a 16-2 run of its own to pull away for a 34-16 halftime advantage.
Becca Ruckes led the Lady Statesmen with 10 first half points. Morgan henry had four to lead Stillman. DSU finished 15-of-29 (51.7), while the Tigers were held to only 19.2 percent (5-of-26).
DSU started the second half slowly, as the Tigers defense held the Lady Statesmen to only eight points in the first six minutes of the second half of play.
The Lady Statesmen went on a 20-7 run over the next nine minutes to grab its biggest lead at 62-28 with 4:55 remaining. The three-point basket by
Chadisty Hickman was the final field goal of the contest.
Stillman held DSU to only 27 percent (10-of-37) in the second half. The Tigers only managed to shoot 30 percent (8-of-26) from the floor in the second 20 minutes of play. DSU finished only 10-of-21 (47.6) from the free throw line.
Hickman finished with a season best 11 points, while Walton and Ruckes finished with 11 and 10 respectively. Ashante Brown led the Tigers with nine points.
DSU returns to action on Monday, December 17 at 5:30 p.m. to take on Tuskegee University. The Lady Statesmen won the previous meeting 72-53 on November 20.
