OBU uses late free throws to defeat Lady Statesmen 75-72

Seneca Walton had a career high 25 points for DSU
Box Score ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Kendra Coyle made a pair of free throws with 17 seconds remaining to help give the Ouachita Baptist University Tigers a hard earned 75-72 over the Delta State University Lady Statesmen, Saturday afternoon at Bill Vining Arena.
 
The Tigers (8-1) led by as many as 12 points in the first half, but a 10-2 run by the Lady Statesmen (6-3) over the last 4:32 of the half  cut the OBU lead to 36-32 at halftime.
 
Seneca Walton led the way with 12 first half points for DSU, while Monica Williams had 13 for the Tigers.
 
OBU shot 43.8 percent (14-of-32) in the first half, while DSU finished 40.0 percent (12-of-30).
 
The Lady Statesmen grabbed a 38-36 lead with 17:59 remaining on a layup by Walton.
 
A jumper by Williams helped the Tigers take a 43-42 lead with 16:20 left. OBU kept its lead, and held a seven point advantage with 7:32 remaining.
 
DSU fought back with an 11-1 run over the next four minutes to take a 67-64 lead with a jump shot by Brittany Roberts.
 
Katherine West gave the Tigers a 70-69 lead with steal and a basket at the 1:15 mark. After a jumper by Nashia James with 51 seconds remaining, Chelsey Rhodes knocked down a big three-pointer to tie the game at 72-72 with only 39 seconds left.
 
After a foul by the Lady Statesmen, Coyle sank both free throws. With five seconds remaining, Walton missed a go-ahead three-pointer, before West made a free throw with one second remaining to finish the scoring.
 
Walton finished with a career high 25 points in the loss to lead all scorers, while Williams led the Tigers with 23. Rhodes (13) and Ball (11) also scored in double figures for DSU. Coyle also finished in double figures, as she scored 19 for the Tigers.
 
Free throws played a big part in the contest, as DSU finished 18-of-25 (72.0), while OBU was 16-of-22 (72.7)
 
DSU will begin a full Gulf South Conference schedule on Thursday, Jan. 3 on the road for a contest with provisional GSC member Union University. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. at Fred DeLay Gymnasium.
