Lady Statesmen bats help pick up two wins on opening day

Amber Adcock finished the day with three RBI's in her DSU debut
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – The Delta State University Lady Statesmen softball team pounded out 17 hits over two games en route to defeated host teams Ouachita Baptist and Henderson State on Friday.
 
DSU (2-0) defeated OBU 4-3 (1-2) in game one, and took game two 8-6 over HSU (1-3).
 
The Lady Statesmen struck first in game one with a pair of RBI's by freshman Amber Adcock and Ashleigh Allgood. Maggie Jackson led off the inning with a double and advanced to third on an error by the left fielder, Parrish Reed.
 
Adcock's double to left drove in Jackson for the first run of the contest. Allgood drove in Adcock on a hard single to left center, giving DSU the 2-0 lead.
 
The Tigers answered with a run in the bottom of the fourth inning with an RBI double to left center that plated pinch runner Hannah Brown.
 
OBU took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the sixth with after a Megan Askew double tied the game at 2-2. An infield single to second base by Teresa Mursuli against new relief pitcher Allgood scored Askew, giving the Tigers the short lived lead.
 
The Lady Statesmen bounced back in the top half of the seventh, when down to the final two outs of the game, leadoff hitter Jordan Cole had her first base hit in the green-and-white, a double to left field.
 
Cole scored the tying run after Adcock singled to center, and the throw to the plate was errant. Freshman Brook Cline drove in what proved to be the game winning run on a bloop single to right center field that scored Adcock.
 
Allgood allowed the tying run to reach second after a one out walk and a stolen base, before forcing a groundout to end the contest.
 
Adcock and Cline shined in their DSU debuts going 2-for-4 with an RBI. Jackson finished with a solid 2-for-3 performance with two doubles.
 
Allgood (1-0) picked up the win in relief, going two innings. The senior allowed one hit with three strikeouts and two walks. Brittany Gonzales worked five innings and allowed three runs on six hits with two strikeouts and a walk.
 
Rayn House (1-1) took the loss, allowing four runs, three earned on nine hits with three strikeouts.
 
DSU didn't waste time jumping ahead in game two at Henderson State, as Jordan Cole sent the third pitch of the game over the left field fence, giving DSU a 1-0 lead.
 
HSU bounced back in the bottom half of the inning against DSU starter Sara Davis, plating two runs on four hits, using an RBI double by Amber Wilburn and an RBI single by Brittnie Dean.
 
The Lady Statesmen took the lead for good with three runs in the top of the second, using back-to-back home runs by Taylor Holland and Jackson. Allgood drove in the third run of the inning with a base hit through the left side, scoring Adcock.
 
Hali Kizer got a run back in the bottom of the second with a solo home run to left center.
 
DSU took a commanding 7-3 lead in the top of the fourth, using a two RBI double by Adcock, and an RBI groundout by Cline.
 
With the Lady Statesmen leading 8-3 in the bottom of the sixth, HSU scored three runs, using a two RBI double by Heather Ivey and an RBI groundout by Amber Klug.
 
Allgood pitched one inning of scoreless relief for the save. Davis (1-0) picked up the win, allowing six runs on twelve hits in 5.1 innings. Katie Hebert also threw 0.2 innings of scoreless relief for DSU.
 
Melissa Decker (1-1) took the loss for the Lady Reddies. The senior allowed seven runs, six earned, on seven hits with one strikeout and two walks. Stephanie Johnson worked 1.2 innings of relief and allowed one run on one hit. Kasey Carlock did not allow a hit in two innings of relief.
 
Cole finished 1-for-2 with an RBI and three runs scored. Adcock also helped the cause going 1-for-2 with two runs scored. Jackson shined at the plate, finishing 2-for-4 with a single and a homerun and two runs scored.
 
DSU returns to action on Saturday to face No. 23 Missouri Western State at 12 p.m. and will finish the day with a rematch with HSU at 2 p.m. Both games will be carried live on www.GoStatesmen.com. J.T. Webb will have the call.
