Lady Statesmen allow 28 hits in two losses on day two of HSU-OBU Classic

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – The Delta State University Lady Statesmen softball team recorded 16 hits, but gave up 28 in the process in two losses at the HSU-OBU Classic on Saturday.
 
Missouri Western (2-1) pitcher Jackie Bishop struck out 11 Lady Statesmen en route to a 5-2 win over DSU (2-2) in game one. Henderson State (3-3) fought back from a 6-3 deficit in the fifth inning to win 15-11 in eight innings.
 
In game one, DSU struck first after an errant throw by MWS shortstop Sarah Elliot that sailed into the Griffons dugout, scoring Taylor Hughes.
 
Keri Lorbert gave the Griffons the lead for the remainder of the contest with a three run home run in the bottom of the third off DSU starting pitcher Ashleigh Allgood.
 
The Lady Statesmen managed only two hits in the contest, one by Raina Stiffler, the other a pinch-hit home run by Marisa Sanders.
 
Lorbert (2-for-3) was the only player in the contest to finish with multiple hits.
 
Bailey (2-0) picked up the win. The sophomore allowed two runs, one earned on two hits.
 
Allgood (1-1) took the loss. The righty worked five innings and allowed four runs on six hits with three strikeouts and five walks. Katie Hebert worked one inning of relief and allowed one run without giving up a hit.
 
Game two was not without drama, as there were 26 combined runs and 36 hits. HSU jumped ahead 3-0 in the top of the first with an RBI single by Sarah Gipson, as well as a two RBI double by Brittnie Dean.
 
The Lady Statesmen tied the contest in the bottom half of the inning with a three run home run by Allgood.
 
DSU jumped ahead 6-3 in the bottom of the fourth with a bases loaded walk and a two RBI single by Sanders.
 
The Lady Reddies responded again, this time in the top of the fifth, with a three run home run by Dean that tied the game at 6-6.
 
HSU added a pair of runs in the top of the seventh with two out RBI's by Hali Kizer and Ashley Ray.
 
The drama continued in the bottom of the seventh when following a pair of singles, Taylor Hughes connected on a Melissa Decker offering and sent it over the center field fence, tying the game at 9-9
 
A six run top of the eighth inning made life difficult for the Lady Statesmen, who managed two runs in the bottom of the eighth to close the scoring at 15-11.
 
Jordan Cole finished with a 3-for-5 performance at the plate, while Amber Adcock, Sanders, Allgood and Hughes each finished with multiple RBI's.
 
Gipson and Amber Klug each had three hits for HSU. Dean led all hitters with a 4-for-5 performance.
 
The Lady Statesmen will return to action on Sunday morning at 9 a.m. to take on Rockhurst University, before concluding the HSU-OBU Classic with an 11 a.m. scheduled contest versus Missouri S&T.
