Box Score HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - The Delta State University Lady Statesmen saw an 11 game win streak snapped in a 71-57 defeat at the hands of the University of Alabama-Huntsville Thursday night inside Spragins Hall on Feb. 16.
Veronica Walker scored nine first-half points but was held scoreless for the remainder of the game.
The Lady Statesmen (17-5, 10-2 GSC) opened the game on a
Brittany Roberts bucket at the 19:41 mark and found themselves trading baskets back and forth with the Lady Chargers (19-4, 10-2 GSC) maintaining a slim lead until Natalie Kelley converted on an old-fashioned three-point play to put Alabama-Huntsville ahead 21-18 with 12:17 remaining in the first-half.
The green-and-white would regain the lead only for a short time from a free throw by Seneca Wallace to put the Lady Statesmen on top 38-37 with 00:52 remaining. The Lady Chargers regained the lead shortly after on two quick baskets from Jasmine Horn at the end of the half to put the blue-and-white back ahead 41-38.
The 41 first-half points are the most that Delta State has given up this season at the half-time break.
Roberts led the Lady Statesmen in the first with nine points and three assists, while
Veronica Walker also contributed nine points.
Seneca Walton led Delta State in rebounding through the first-half and also posted three blocks.
Jasmine Hammon and Jordan Smith led the Lady Chargers in the first with 16 and 10 points respectively, while Natalie Kelley followed closely behind her fellow teammates with an eight point effort.
Ann Shelby Davis opened up the second-half with a jumper for the Lady Statesmen only for the Lady Chargers to reel off an 8-2 run and lead 49-40 with 14:14 remaining in the contest.
The Lady Statesmen went cold from the floor in the second-half only connecting on 6-of-23 (26.1%) from the floor while the Lady Chargers continued their hot shooting converting 25 total field goals in the contest which is tied for the most the green-and-white has given up on the year.
Brooke Rhodes and
Denesha Henderson paced the Lady Statesmen's offense scoring 11 a piece and were followed closely by Roberts who posted 10 points in the contest. Walker who finished with nine points was held to her lowest point total since 2010 against the University of West Georgia.
Hammon posted a double-double for the Lady Chargers scoring 25 points and gathering 10 rebounds on the night. Her supporting cast of Smith and Kelley contributed 16 and 12 points respectively, while Bailee Robinson totaled 10 points on the night.
The Lady Statesmen return to action on Saturday when they welcome the University of North Alabama to Sillers Coliseum on Feb. 18, at 4 p.m. for its annual “Play for Kay” Cancer Awareness Day. DSU will also be honoring the 20
th anniversary of DSU's 1992 NCAA Division II National Championship.
