Lady Statesmen get 47th straight conference win at Sillers, defeating UNA 57-41

Box Score CLEVELAND, Miss. – Delta State got back to its winning ways Saturday afternoon, as the Lady Statesmen defeated North Alabama 57-41. The win was the Lady Statesmen's 47th straight Gulf South Conference victory at Sillers Coliseum.

The victory was Delta State's seventh consecutive victory overall at Sillers Coliseum.
 
Veronica Walker led all players with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Walker carried the Lady Statesmen (18-5, 11-2 GSC) in the second half with 13 points to pull away from the Lions (13-12, 4-9 GSC).
 
The Lady Statesmen used a 17-4 run, led by Walker, early in the second half to open up a 14-point lead on North Alabama, which was carried comfortably to the end.
 
The Lady Statesmen carried a 26-24 lead into the half. Brook Rhodes and Walker each had nine points in the first half to lead the game in scoring.
 
Rhodes finished with 11 points, tied for second most in the game among all players.
 
In the first half, Delta State saw the free-throw line only four times, making three of those attempts. North Alabama had 15 free throw attempts in the first half, making 11 of them.
 
In the second half, the Lady Statesmen only had five opportunities at the free-throw stripe, making four of them. Delta State finished 7-of-9 (78 percent) from the free throw line.
 
The Lady Statesmen struggled offensively in the first 20 minutes, shooting only 35.5 percent from the field and 20 percent from three-point range. Delta State shot 46.4 percent from the field in the second half, to bring the game total to 40.7 percent.
 
Defensively minded, the Lady Statesmen held North Alabama to 23.1 percent shooting and 12.5 percent from behind the three-point line. In the second half, the Lady Statesmen proved even tougher, holding North Alabama to only 21.7 percent shooting.
 
The Lady Statesmen will be in action Thursday night when they host the University of New Orleans in a non-conference match up. Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m.
