Box Score 2 CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Delta State University Lady Statesmen softball team used complete game outings from pitchers
Ashleigh Allgood and
Brittany Gonzales to help DSU sweep Stillman College 5-3, 2-0 Saturday at University Field.
Stillman (3-6) took the lead in the bottom of the first with a sacrifice fly by Aubree Holt.
Bailey Braughton gave the Lady Tigers a 2-0 lead in the top of the third with a home run to left field against Allgood.
DSU (7-5) picked up its first hit and run in the bottom half of the inning with back-to-back doubles by
Jordan Cole and
Amber Adcock.
The Lady Statesmen took the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning with a three spot that included RBIs by Allgood,
Taylor Hughes and
Raina Stiffler.
After a Danielle Hewett RBI got the Lady Tigers to within 4-3, Hughes added an insurance run with a double that scored pinch runner
Bre Goley.
Allgood (4-2) went the distance for the win. The University of West Florida transfer struck out at least one hitter per inning to finish with nine in the contest. Brittany Perry allowed nine DSU hits in the loss, while Allgood allowed five.
Cole, Allgood, Hughes and Stiffler each had two hits for DSU.
Adcock put the Lady Statesmen ahead in game two in the bottom half of the first with her first career home run, a solo shot to left field.
Following a leadoff triple in the bottom of the third by Cole, Adcock completed the scoring in the contest with an RBI single to left.
Gonzales got out of a bases loaded jam with one out in the bottom of the sixth, when Adcock robbed Stillman's Paten Williams with a spectacular diving stop to get the force out at second.
Gonzales (2-1) allowed only four hits in her second complete game shutout in three starts.
Savage allowed six hits in the loss. Adcock (2-for-3) was the only DSU player with multiple hits.
The Lady Statesmen will return to University Field on Wednesday, Feb. 28 for a doubleheader with Belhaven University beginning at 5 p.m.
