CLEVELAND, Miss. – Senior All-American forward
Veronica Walker scored 21 points and senior guard
Denesha Henderson added eight points to close out their careers at Walter Sillers Coliseum on Senior Night, leading the Delta State University Women's Basketball team to an 88-45 victory over Christian Brothers University in the final game of the regular season.
The Lady Statesmen (20-5, 12-2 GSC), who claimed the Gulf South Conference regular season title with the win over CBU and an 81-77 loss by UA-Huntsville to North Alabama, dominated the game from the jump and it was freshmen setting the pace, as
Rhandi Ball and
Seneca Walton recorded career highs. Ball helped set the tone in the first half and closed the game with a double-double on a career-high 14 points and 16 rebounds. Walton finished with a career best 17 points and seven boards.
Ann Shelby Davis joined the group in double figures with 10.
Brooke Rhodes had nine points and a career-high six assists.
The Lady Buccaneers (5-21, 2-12 GSC) out two players in double figures led by Amber Williams and Aramis Judson with 10 points each.
DSU finished the game shooting 47.9 percent on 34-of-71 shots, including 16-of-21 at the line. CBU shot just 35.4 percent on 17-of-48 attempts and a mere 1-of-7 from 3-point range. The Lady Statesmen dominated the glass, out rebounding CBU 52-26 and outscoring the Lady Bucs in the paint 46-14.
The Lady Statesmen exploded offensively right out of the gate, taking a 51-22 lead into the locker room at halftime. Walker had 14 at the break, but freshman forward
Rhandi Ball was the star of the show with nine points and 12 rebounds.
DSU shot 51.3 percent in the first on 20-of-39 attempts from the floor, while CBU hit on just 10-of-26 shots for 38.5 percent.
Prior to the game, Delta State honored its two Lady Statesmen seniors
Denesha Henderson, a 5-foot-8 guard from Guy, Ark., and
Veronica Walker, a 6-foot-2 forward from Indianola, Miss., at a special ceremony before tipoff. Walker, the 2011 Gillom Trophy winner, is a leading candidate to repeat for the Gillom and is also a frontrunner for Women's Basketball Coaches Association National Player of the Year.
The Lady Statesmen will open play in the Gulf South Conference Women's Basketball Tournament on Thursday, March 1 versus a yet to be determined opponent. Game times will be announced on Sunday.
