CLEVELAND – The rain stayed away Wednesday as the Delta State softball team hosted Belhaven University in a mid-week double header. After the Blazers won the first game 6-4, the Lady Statesmen came back in the second game with a 5-4 victory of their own.
The Lady Statesmen came right out of the gate, and took control of game one with two runs in each of the first two innings. In the first, Brook Cline brought home Jordan Cole with a base hit up the middle. Later in the inning, Cline scored on an error by Belhaven.
Jordan Cole the added two more runs for the Lady Statesmen in the second inning, with a two run homer over the left field wall. The home run was Cole's third of the season.
Down 4-0, the Blazers started their comeback in the middle innings. Belhaven brought runs across the plate in third and fourth inning. Then the Blazers took the lead with three runs in the sixth inning. Belhaven added one more run in the top of the seventh, and came away with a 6-4 victory in game one.
Brittany Gonzales (2-2) suffered the loss for the Lady Statesmen. Bayleigh Babin (5-1) picked up the win for Belhaven.
The Blazers came out red hot in game two, and scored the first four runs of the game during the first two innings. The Lady Statesmen started to cut in to the deficit in the third inning with their first run. Ashleigh Allgood brought home Amber Adcock with a base hit up the middle.
After a scoreless fourth inning, the Lady Statesmen scored two in the fifth inning. With runners on second and third, Raina Stiffler brought both home with a single to left field. The runs cut the Belhaven lead to just one heading into the sixth inning.
The Lady Statesmen were down to their final three outs, as they trailed 4-3 as the bottom of the seventh started. Taylor Hughes started the innings, with a base hit to center field. Taylor Holland followed with a double that scored a run to tie the game up at 4-4. Then with the bases loaded and two outs, Adcock hit a game winning single to left center field that won the game for the Lady Statesmen.
Allgood (5-2), who pitched in the first game, picked up the win in the second game. Allgood pitched all seven innings, gave up four runs, and struck out four.
Jessica Paris (1-2) suffered the loss for the Blazers. Paris came on in the seventh inning, and gave up the winning runs.
With the split the Lady Statesmen improve their record to 8-6 on the season. They are off until next Tuesday when they will host Mississippi Valley State. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
