Box Score CLEVELAND—The Delta State women's basketball team has been on a major roll in 2012, and that continued Saturday afternoon as they hosted West Florida. The Lady Statesmen used a big first half, as they completed the season sweep of the Argonauts with a 67-55 victory. The win is the ninth-in-a-row for the Lady Statesmen, and they have won 12 of their last 13.
Both teams came out looking to run in the first half, but it was the Lady Statesmen who found their offensive rhythm. After a quick West Florida bucket, gave the Argonauts an early 6-4 lead, the Lady Statesmen took control of the game.
The Lady Statesmen (15-4, 8-1 GSC) tied the game at six, and proceeded to go on a 28-16 run over the rest of the first half. The run helped the Lady Statesmen take a 34-22 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Senior forward
Veronica Walker set another milestone during the first half. After eclipsing the 2,000 point mark Thursday against Valdosta State, Walker grabbed her 1,000th career rebound early in the game against the Argonauts.
Walker put together a solid first half, as she scored 11 points, and grabbed four rebounds to lead the Lady Statesmen. Freshman forward
Rhandi Ball scored six for Delta State.
As a team, the Lady Statesmen shot 42 percent from the floor and 33 percent from three point range. The squad also went 5-for-5 from the free throw line.
Octavia Bearden led the Argonauts in scoring during the first half with eight points. Sher'Ryan Scott scored six in the opening frame.
The Argonauts (8-13, 4-5 GSC) shot 43 percent from the field in the opening half. They were 0-of-3 from three-point range, and 4-of-7 from the foul line.
West Florida came out in the second half looking to get back into the contest. They did just that with a couple of early buckets, but the Lady Statesmen responded. Senior guard
Denesha Henderson scored the Lady Statesmen's first bucket of the second half to get lead back up to 10 points.
Sophomore guard
Brooke Rhodes then hit a big three to extend the Lady Statesmen's lead, but the Argonauts did not go away. Erica Wright came back down the floor and hit a three for West Florida which cut the Delta State lead to 10.
While the Lady Statesmen's lead hovered around 10 points for most of the second half, West Florida went on a run to cut the deficit to seven points with 6:22 to play. However, just as earlier in the game, the Lady Statesmen responded with Rhodes hitting a big three.
The bucket sparked the Lady Statesmen offense, as they pushed their lead back into double-digits. The Argonauts kept fighting, but could not close the gap, as the Lady Statesmen came away with the 67-55 victory.
Walker led the Lady Statesmen in scoring with a team-high 19 points, and also grabbed eight rebounds. Rhodes had a big second half, as she scored 12 points in the final 20 minutes to bring her game total to 15. All eight Lady Statesmen who played scored in the contest.
As a team, the Lady Statesmen shot 45 percent for the game. They were 4-of-6 from three point range which included going 3-for-3 from long distance in the second half. For the game the Lady Statesmen shot 15-of-17 from the foul line.
Scott led the Argonauts in scoring with a game-high 20 points. Bearden was also in double figures for West Florida with 16 points.
The Argonauts shot 50 percent as a team from the floor. They were just 1-of-6 from three point range, and 8-of-11 from the free-throw line.
The Lady Statesmen committed 10 turnovers, which West Florida turned into 12 points. The Lady Statesmen scored 15 points off of 16 turnovers by the Argonauts. The Lady Statesmen won the battle on the boards with 30 rebounds compared to 26 for West Florida.
The Lady Statesmen hit the road next week, as they look to keep their winning streak going. The first stop next week for the Lady Statesmen is a Thursday match-up against West Georgia. Delta State won the first match up 60-46 back on Jan. 12. Tip-off for Thursday is set for 5 p.m. in Carrollton, Ga.
