Box Score CARROLLTON, Ga. – The Delta State University women's basketball team outlasted the University of West Georgia in 55-50 win at The Coliseum in Carrollton, Ga. on Thursday.
Denesha Henderson's double-double performance fueled the Lady Statesmen on the night both offensively and defensively.
The Lady Statesmen (16-4, 9-1 GSC) looked to control paint area both offensively and defensively early in the contest scoring inside on their first seven points, while the Shunice Hardy would connect on a three-pointer for the Wolves (8-13, 3-7 GSC) at the 16:33 mark to close the gap to a 7-5 lead for the green and white early in the contest.
West Georgia gained confidence shooting 5-of-9 from the floor to even the score at the 12:15 mark but were unable to pull ahead of the Lady Statesmen thanks in part to Henderson's 12 point first-half performance.
Delta State and West Georgia failed to convert free throws in the first-half that could have either given the Lady Statesmen a larger lead or given the Wolves the lead in certain situations. The green and white connected only on 2-of-6 of their free throws while UWG went 6-of-12 from the charity strip.
Henderson led all scorers in the first-half with 12 points and five rebounds, while
Veronica Walker tossed in seven points and Aubrey Ray chipped in seven first-half rebounds.
Hardy led the Wolves in the first-half posting 10 points and five rebounds. Angela Davis would add six points while teammates Valerie Jones and Krystal Delph chipped in four points apiece.
West Georgia opened the second-half with a pair of Hardy free-throws to give the Wolves their third tie of the contest 26-26 at the 19:26 mark but Henderson picked up where she left off in the first-half inspiring the Lady Statesmen both offensively and defensively.
Henderson's steal and old fashioned three point play with 10:37 left to play gave the Lady Statesmen a 39-32 lead.
Brooke Rhodes who averages 13.5 points per game connected on her first basket of the night with 4:52 remaining putting the Lady Statesmen up 44-37 over the Wolves.
Delta State continued their dominance inside the paint finishing the contest with 32 points compared to West Georgia's 16. The Lady Statesmen also controlled the boards pulling in 40 rebounds while the Wolves only managed 29 on the night.
Henderson finished the night completing her second career double-double with 21 points, 10 rebounds, and also snagged five steals. Aubrey Ray had a career night grabbing 10 rebounds for the green and white and posting eight points.
Veronica Walker managed 10 points despite only playing a total 22 minutes.
Brittany Roberts contributed eight points and four assists; while Rhodes finished the night with a six point and nine rebound performance.
Hardy finished the night with 23 points and nine rebounds while teammates Valerie Jones and Angela Davis contributed six points apiece for the Wolves. Mone Peoples and Krystal Delph also chipped in five points apiece on the night.
The Lady Statesmen return to action on Saturday, Feb. 11, at Pruitt Hall in Livingston against the University of West Alabama. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
