Box Score 2 MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Christian Brothers Lady Buccaneers used late game heroics in each game to sweep the Delta State University Lady Statesmen 7-5 and 6-5 (8) Wednesday at Bland Field in the Gulf South Conference opener for each team.
DSU (8-9, 0-2) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, capitalizing on three CBU errors in the inning. Pitcher
Ashleigh Allgood drove in a run with an RBI groundout, and
Amber Adcock scored on a throwing error.
The Lady Bucs (6-8, 2-0) pulled to within 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth when Allgood issued a bases loaded walk to Emily Schmidt.
CBU exploded for six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning when six straight hitters reached base.
Sara Davis entered the game in relief of Allgood to retire the side.
The Lady Statesmen put a scare into CBU in the top of the seventh with an RBI double by
Amber Adcock and a two out two run home run by Allgood.
Lady Bucs pitcher Kim Adams induced a
Marisa Sanders groundout to finish the contest.
Adams (4-4) picked up the win, allowing five runs, three earned on seven hits.
Allgood (5-4) took the loss, allowing six runs, five earned on 10 hits. Davis allowed one run in relief.
Adcock, Allgood and
Maggie Jackson each had two hits for DSU.
Game two started much the same as Delta State plated a run in the first, second and third innings. The Lady Statesmen again used RBIs by Allgood and Adcock, which followed
Taylor Hughes scoring on a wild pitch.
The Lady Bucs did not pick up a hit against DSU starter
Brittany Gonzales until the third inning, but managed to pick up 12 more hits in the contest.
Nikki Story's RBI base hit in the bottom of the fourth gave CBU its first run in game two.
Marie Joiner got CBU to within 3-2 in the bottom of the fifth with a single down the left field line.
The Lady Bucs tied the contest in the bottom of the sixth with a bunt single by Allyson Grooms.
DSU appeared to take control in the top of the seventh with a pair of runs, with a sac fly RBI by Hughes and an RBI hit by
Taylor Holland.
The Lady Statesmen had CBU down to its final out in the bottom of the seventh, before the Lady Bucs took advantage of three Gonzales walks in the inning, including one with the bases loaded.
CBU also had a pair of hits in the frame, as Joiner doubled with one out, and Grooms slow roller to first with two outs scored a run.
After recording three straight outs in the top of the seventh, CBU finished the contest in the bottom of the eighth with a walk-off single by Rachel Kelly that scored Sammi Canizaro, who reached on an error to start the inning.
Gonzales (2-3) took the loss. The junior allowed six runs, four earned on 12 hits. Allgood pitched to the final hitter in relief.
Adams (5-4) earned the win in relief of starter Amanda Wade and relief pitcher Michelle McEachron.
Grooms finished 4-for-4 in the contest. Hughes (2-for-2) was the only DSU player with two hits.
The Lady Statesmen will return to action on Thursday, March 15 for a 2 p.m. home doubleheader versus Ouachita Baptist. The Lady Statesmen defeated Ouachita Baptist 4-3 in the season opener on February 10.
