Box Score 2 LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama Tigers used timely hitting and clutch pitching to sweep a doubleheader from the Delta State University Lady Statesmen softball team, Sunday at the UWA softball complex.
The Tigers (17-11, 7-3) took game one 5-4 and used four Taylor Beck RBIs to win game two 9-3.
DSU (12-17, 2-8) lost its fourth straight Gulf South Conference contest in the sweep.
UWA struck for a pair of runs in the first two innings of the contest to take an early 4-0 lead. The Tigers used two RBI singles, a double and a sacrifice fly to score the runs.
The Lady Statesmen got on the board in a big way in the top of the fifth with a three-run pinch-hit home run by
Caroline Womack off UWA starter Kristen Skinner.
An RBI groundout by Morgan Morrison proved to be the winning run, as Stephanie Shoup slid under the tag of DSU catcher
Taylor Hughes at home plate.
DSU threatened in the top of the seventh, picking up two hits, before
Amber Adcock was thrown out at third base, following a base hit by
Marisa Sanders.
Skinner (7-3) allowed four runs, two earned, on nine hits with four strikeouts.
Ashleigh Allgood (6-9) took the loss, allowing four runs on five hits with a strikeout and a walk.
Lauren Kendall was stellar in her first appearance in her DSU career, allowing one run on one hit with three strikeouts in four innings of work.
Sanders (2-for-4) was the only DSU player with multiple hits. Tamara Vickers finished 2-for-4 for the Tigers.
DSU didn't waste time jumping ahead in game two, as
Jordan Cole and
Amber Adcock led off the top of the first with back-to-back doubles, giving the Lady Statesmen a 1-0 lead.
Kendall wasn't as fortunate in game two as she got the start, and allowed four runs, including three in the bottom of the first.
DSU made it a 4-2 contest in the top of the third with one of two Allgood RBIs. The Tigers responded again, making it 5-2 with a homerun in the bottom of the third by Morrison.
Allgood's second RBI single made it 5-3 in the top of the fifth, but UWA plated a pair of runs in the fifth and sixth to complete the scoring.
Kendall (0-1) took the loss for DSU.
Brittany Gonzales allowed three runs on four hits in 3.2 innings of relief, while
Sara Davis allowed a pair of runs on four hits in one inning of relief.
Jessica Brock (10-3) went the distance in the win, allowing three runs on 10 hits.
Cole had two doubles for DSU. Sanders and Allgood also had two hits for the Lady Statesmen.
Vickers finished 3-for-4 in game two for the Tigers.
The Lady Statesmen will return to action at University Field on Wednesday, March 28 for a 2 p.m. doubleheader with Henderson State University.
