Valdosta State uses long ball in sweep of Lady Statesmen

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CLEVELAND – The No. 1 Valdosta State Lady Blazers hit three home runs and capitalized on five Delta State University errors in a doubleheader sweep of the Lady Statesmen, Sunday at University Field.
 
The Lady Blazers took game one 7-3, and held on for a 3-1 win in game two.
 
VSU (31-2, 16-0) struck for three runs in the top of the first inning in game one, capitalizing on two DSU errors that occurred with the bases loaded.
 
DSU (15-20, 3-11) tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the third, using an RBI single by Marisa Sanders and a two run homer by Ashleigh Allgood.
 
Morgan Johnson blasted a two run shot to left field in the top of the fourth that gave VSU the lead for good at 5-3.
 
A sacrifice fly and a fielding error by DSU in the top of the sixth gave VSU a pair of insurance runs, and ended the scoring at 7-3.
 
Courtney Albritton, April Hutchens and Johnson each had two hits for VSU. The Lady Statesmen did not have a player with multiple hits.
 
Brittany Gonzales (7-6) allowed seven runs, two earned, on eight hits in the loss.
 
Alanna Hadley allowed three unearned runs on four hits in the win.
 
Jordan Cole smacked a solo home run to center field in the bottom of the first to give the Lady Statesmen the lead in game two.
 
Starting pitcher Lauren Kendall held VSU hitless until the top of the third, when Albritton singled to the shortstop.
 
VSU struck for a run in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, as Marti Littlefield homered in the fourth and sixth innings. Johnson doubled home Hutchens in the top of the fifth.
 
Lady Blazer pitcher Brianna Hancock (8-1) allowed only four hits, including only one in the last four innings
 
Kendall (0-2) allowed three runs on eight hits. Allgood recorded the final two outs in the top of the seventh with runners on first and third.
 
Littlefield, Johnson and Hutchens each had two hits for VSU.
 
The Lady Statesmen will return to the diamond on Tuesday, April 3 for a scheduled 2 p.m. doubleheader at the University of Arkansas Monticello.
