Box Score 2 MONTICELLO, Ark. – The Delta State University Lady Statesmen softball team allowed 23 hits in two games, as the University of Arkansas-Monticello swept the two game doubleheader 8-0 (6) and 5-4 (8), Tuesday at Blossoms park.
UAM (30-10) won its 16th straight game in the process, and defeated DSU (17-24) for the 10th straight time.
The Cotton Blossoms took a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning, as Taylor Russell led off the inning with a solo home run, which was followed by an RBI double by Maggie Sands and a double steal with runners on first and third.
With a 7-0 lead in the bottom of the sixth, Russell singled to right field, scoring pinch runner Kara House to end the game by the eight run mercy rule.
Kayla Jackson (20-4) baffled the DSU lineup, allowing only three hits with five strikeouts and one walk.
Brittany Gonzales (8-7) allowed four runs, three earned on eight hits in five innings of work.
Sara Davis allowed four runs on five hits in 0.1 innings.
UAM took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second in game two with a sacrifice fly by Jennifer Hickman.
DSU responded with a pair of runs in the top of the third with a fielder's choice RBI by
Ashleigh Allgood and a sacrifice fly by
Taylor Hughes.
The Lady Statesmen took a 4-1 lead in the top of the fourth RBI's by
Jordan Cole and Allgood.
UAM plated single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to tie the game at 4-4, using a wild pitch, and RBI single and a sacrifice fly.
Jackson was brought back into the pitching circle in the second game with two outs in the top of the fifth, and allowed only one hit the rest of the way.
Beth Johnson knocked in the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the eighth, as her RBI single to left center field scored Sara Matthews.
Amber Adcock and Cole each had three hits for DSU.
Allgood allowed four runs on seven hits.
Lauren Kendall (0-4) took the loss in relief.
The Lady Statesmen will return to action on Wednesday, April 11 for a road doubleheader with the Southern Arkansas Lady Muleriders. The two teams split a doubleheader in Cleveland on March 19. Both games will be carried live on the Lady Statesmen Internet Radio Network.
