Lady Statesmen use clutch hitting to sweep UNA

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 FLORENCE, Ala. – The Delta State University Lady Statesmen scored a combined seven runs in the seventh inning to sweep a Gulf South Conference doubleheader over the North Alabama Lions, Sunday at the UNA Softball Complex.
 
The Lady Statesmen (20-27, 7-15) scored five runs in the top of the seventh to take game one 7-2, and scored a pair of runs in the top of the seventh to take game two 4-3. The wins marked the first GSC sweep of the season, and the first GSC road wins for DSU.
 
DSU took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth, when Brook Cline hit her first career home run over the left field fence. The Lady Statesmen took a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the sixth with an RBI double by Ashleigh Allgood.
 
UNA (18-21, 7-17) tied the game in the bottom of the sixth with a two run home run by Dani Colwill.
 
Taylor Holland's two out RBI single in the top of the seventh that scored Maggie Jackson proved to be the game winning run, but DSU added six more runs in the inning. Katie Hebert had a two RBI single in the inning, and Cline had an RBI single as well.
 
Hebert scored the last run of the contest on a double steal attempt with two outs.
 
Lauren Kendall (2-5) picked up the win in relief of Brittany Gonzales. Kendall allowed one hit in two innings of relief, while Gonzales allowed two runs on five hits in five innings.
 
Jackson and Cline had four of DSU's eight hits. Colwill finished 3-for-3 with two RBIs.
 
DSU took a 2-0 lead in the first inning of game two with an RBI single by Taylor Hughes. Hughes scored on the play, as the throw from center field went into the DSU dugout.
 
The Lions made the score 2-1 in the bottom of the third with an RBI single by Colwill, here third RBI of the day.
 
UNA took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI single by Ali Barnette, and scored on a Lady Statesman error.
 
With pinch runner Bre Goley on first base, Jackson slammed a ball to deep left that was dropped by Barnette as she collided with the fence.
 
Jackson scored the winning run on the next at bat, as Hughes drove in the winning run with her fifth sacrifice fly of the season.
 
Gonzales (9-9) picked up the win in 1.2 innings of relief. Allgood allowed one run on five hits in three innings, while Kendall allowed two runs, one earned on four hits in 2.1 innings.
 
Evalena Behr allowed only two DSU hits, but walked seven hitters. Julie Mercer had three hits for the Lions.
 
The Lady Statesmen will return to the diamond on Tuesday, April 17 for a single game at Mississippi Valley State. First pitch is set for 5 p.m.
