Box Score 2 CLEVELAND – The Delta State University Lady Statesmen softball team scored four combined runs in the sixth and seventh innings en route to a doubleheader sweep of the Christian Brothers Lady Buccaneers, Wednesday at University Field.
DSU (22-27, 9-15) scored two in the bottom of the sixth in game one for a 3-2 win, and a pair in the bottom of the seventh in game two for a 2-1 win.
The Lady Statesmen took a 1-0 lead in game one in the bottom of the third inning with an RBI groundout by
Taylor Hughes.
Brittany Gonzales kept the Lady Bucs (11-27, 6-18) off the scoreboard until the top of the fifth when pinch runner Lorin Raines beat the throw to the plate on a ground ball to the second baseman. CBU took a 2-1 lead in the same inning with an RBI single by Marie Joiner.
DSU scored what proved to be the winning runs in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI double by
Taylor Holland, followed by a
Katie Hebert single that plated Holland.
Gonzales (10-9) allowed two runs on seven hits with one walk and one strikeout.
Kim Adams (9-14) allowed three runs on five hits in six innings.
Joiner finished 3-for-4 to lead CBU.
Maggie Jackson had two hits in three trips for DSU.
Game two proved to be a battle between starting pitchers Amanda Wade of CBU and
Ashleigh Allgood of DSU.
After allowing a first inning hit, Allgood retired 13 straight CBU hitters. Allyson Grooms was hit by a pitch with one out in the sixth to end the streak.
Wade retired 11-of-12 DSU hitters to open the game after allowing a hit in the second, and a walk in the fourth.
The Lady Bucs took a 1-0 lead in the top of the sixth with an RBI double by Taylor Rosa-Ramon. DSU kept a 1-0 lead going into the bottom of the seventh when following an Olivia Kegler single,
Maggie Jackson picked up her 10
th outfield assist of the season, throwing out Raines at the plate.
Holland led off the bottom of the seventh with a single through the left side, and scored the tying run on an RBI double to center field by Hebert.
After Holland advanced to third on a wild pitch by Adams, who entered the game in relief,
Kendall Sizemore bunted home the winning run down the first base line on a squeeze play.
Allgood (9-10) allowed one run on five hits with three strikeouts. Wade (0-6) allowed two runs on four hits. Adams gave up the winning run, which was charged to Wade.
Holland had two of DSU's four hits. Rosa Ramon had two of CBU's five hits.
DSU has won four straight games, which marks its longest streak of the season.
The Lady Statesmen will return to action Thursday, April 19 for a home doubleheader versus the University of Arkansas Monticello. UAM swept a doubleheader with DSU on April 10. The games will be the final home contests of the year for the Lady Statesmen.
