UWA holds off Lady Statesmen comback bids in doubleheader sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CLEVELAND – The University of West Alabama held off two sixth inning comeback attempts by the Delta State University Lady Statesmen softball team in a two game sweep, Friday at University Field.
 
UWA (21-15, 9-7) withstood a late inning comeback by the Lady Statesmen (15-22, 3-13) for a 5-4 win in game one, and got out of a bases loaded jam in the sixth to win 6-2.
 
The Tigers grabbed a 3-0 lead in the top of the third, using an RBI base hit by Morgan Morrison along with a bases loaded walk and a wild pitch by pitcher Brittany Gonzales.
 
The Lady Statesmen did not reach base until the bottom of the fifth with a walk by Taylor Holland. UWA starter Kristen Skinner did not allow a hit until the bottom of the sixth. Trailing 4-0 DSU used RBI base hits by Ashleigh Allgood and Taylor Hughes along with a walked in run and a wild pitch to tie the game at 4-4.
 
After a bunt single to start the inning, Maggie Jackson struck out swinging with the bases loaded to end the threat.
 
UWA pushed across the winning run in the top of the seventh with a Rebecca Schick sacrifice fly that scored Tamara Vickers.
 
With Jordan Cole on third base, Skinner forced a pop fly to right by Holland to end the game.
 
Skinner (9-5) allowed four runs on four hits with seven strikeouts and four walks in the win. Sara Davis (1-2) took the loss in relief, as she allowed one run on no hits in 1.2 innings of work. Brittany Gonzales allowed four runs on seven hits with five strikeouts and two walks in 5.1 innings of work.
 
Morrison had three hits, including a solo home run for UWA.
 
The Tigers scored a run in each of the first three innings against DSU starter Lauren Kendall.
 
With a 3-0 lead in the top of the fifth, the Tigers scored a pair of runs, capitalizing on three DSU errors, including two that directly lead to runs being scored.
 
The Lady Statesmen threatened in the bottom of the sixth, using RBI singles by Raina Stiffler and Brook Cline. Relief pitcher Taylor Tucker forced Jackson to fly out to center field with the bases loaded to end the inning.
 
UWA scored the final run of the game in the top of the seventh, as Taylor Beck scored on a throwing error by the catcher, Hughes.
 
Kelsey Cooper finished a perfect 4-of-4 for UWA. Morrison and Beck added a pair of hits. Amber Adcock finished 3-for-4 and Stiffler finished with a pair of hits for DSU.
 
Jessica Brock (12-5) allowed two runs on six hits with four walks and three strikeouts in the win. Tucker picked up her second save, allowing three hits in 1.2 innings.
 
Kendall (0-3) allowed five runs, three earned on eight hits. Ashleigh Allgood allowed one unearned run on three hits in three innings of relief.
 
The Lady Statesmen will return to action at University Field on Saturday, April 7 for a doubleheader with the University of West Florida. Four Lady Statesmen seniors will be honored before the 12 p.m. first pitch.
