Lady Statesmen sweep Argonauts 4-0; 7-2 on senior day

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2  Cleveland – The Delta State University softball team completed a two game sweep against the University of West Florida Argonauts on Saturday, April 7, at University Field.

The Lady Statesmen (17-22, 5-13 GSC) took game one of the double-header winning 4-0 and followed up with a 7-2 victory in game two over the Argonauts (27-17, 11-7 GSC).

Brittany Gonzales (8-6) had complete command inside the circle in game one for the Lady Statesmen. Gonzales tossed a shutout and only allowed six hits while going the distance by pitching a complete game in the winning effort for the green-and-white. The junior also recorded four strikeouts in the outing.

Delta State led off the first inning with back-to-back hits from Jordan Cole and Amber Adcock. Cole crossed home plate to give the Lady Statesmen the lead off of a Taylor Holland single to right center and Taylor Hughes' single up the middle allowed Adcock to advance home giving the green-and-white an early 2-0 lead.

Taylor Holland paced the Lady Statesmen offense in game one hitting 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBI's while Bre Goley picked up her first two hits of season also going 2-for-3 with a run scored.

Jordan Ratliff (7-6) received the loss for West Florida.

Senior day at University Field proved to be a special one for senior Ashleigh Allgood (8-10) who only allowed the Argonauts to scatter seven hits and two runs while recording six strikeouts through 5.2 innings pitched.

The green-and-white jumped out in front in the first inning of game two capitalizing on three West Florida errors to gain a 3-0 lead.

The Argonauts responded in the third producing their first run of the game on a Kaley Kania double down the left field line.

The senior, Allgood helped herself out going 1-for-3 at the dish with four RBI's with the highlight of the game being a three-run homerun in the bottom of the fourth inning to give the Lady Statesmen 7-1 lead.

Kania again contributed to West Florida's run total by crossing home plate on a Crystal Thompson sacrifice fly to right field.

Sara Scott (9-6) picked up the loss in game two for the Argonauts.

The Lady Statesmen travel to the University of Arkansas at Monticello on April 10 with first-pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
