SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - The Delta State soccer team fell to Southwest Baptist Saturday evening 3-1 in the Statesmen's season opener.
Delta State (0-1-0) struck first against the Bearcats (1-0-0), scoring early in the second half, but were unable to hold on to the lead as Southwest Baptist answerd back with three unanswered goals.
Caue Da Silva put the Statesmen up in the 52nd minute, scoring his first goal as a Statesmen. Da Silva's goal came off of a penalty kick resulting from a foul inside the box.
Southwest Baptist answered immediately, scoring 22 seconds later to tie the game at one goal a piece.The Bearcats added two more, scoring in the 62nd minute and 86th minute.
The Statesmen outshot Southwest Baptist 16 to 11, but were unable to record a shot on goal after having four on target in the first five shots.

Milos Boskovic faced seven shots on goal. The freshman recorded four saves in his first start for the Statesmen.
Delta State will look to rebound when they play Southern Nazarene on Monday, Sept. 3 at 12 p.m. in the Statesmen's second and final game at the Drury Invitational.
