Box Score
CLEVELAND - The Statesmen soccer program picked up a 2-0 win over The University of Alabama in Huntsville on a rainy Sunday afternoon at Delta Field.
The win matches the longest streak in Statesmen history set just over four years ago in a 2-0 win over Lyon College on Sept 13, 2008. The win is also the first time the Statesmen have started out conference play 2-0-0.
Sebastian Ridout got things rolling for the Statesmen when he scored in the 11th minute off a pass from Caue Da Silva. The goal was Ridout's second of the season.
Daniel Deblaere picked up a secondary assist on the play as he set up the goal with a ball into Da Silva from the right edge.
In the 20th minute, Da Silva gave the Statesmen an insurance goal, scoring his eighth goal of the season off a ball in from
Luke Mason.
The Statesmen dominated play in the first half before a heavy downpour started. Delta State had 17 shots, including seven on goal, in the first 45 minutes and had eight corner kicks. The Chargers had three shots, with only one on target in the first half.
As halftime approached, a cloudy afternoon sky opened up and poured for much of the second half. With the field wet, both teams were able to take advantage of mistakes and develop scoring chances. The Chargers out shot the Statesmen 6-5 in the second half.
Statesmen goalkeeper
Milos Boskovic stayed on top of the Chargers chances, including two great saves in the second half to preserve the clean sheet, his first as a Statesmen.
Delta State will look to extend their winning streak when they travel to West Alabama Friday for a conference match against the first-year program.
