Statesmen streak snapped with 2-1 loss at UWA

LIVINGSTON, Ala. - The Statesmen soccer program's win streak was snapped at five games Friday night as Delta State fell to West Alabama 2-1 in a nail bighter.

The streak matches the longest win streak in Delta State (5-2, 2-1 Gulf South Conference) history set back in 2008.

West Alabama (6-1, 2-0 GSC) took the lead with a goal in the first half, but it was the Statesmen who carried the momentum coming out of the halftime break. After a scoring opportunity, was cleared out-of-bounds, Daniel Deblaere headed home a throw-in pass by Jaxon Lambert to nod the game up at one goal a piece.

Luke Mason then hit the post with a strong effort just outside the bok and the Statesmen also had a couple other near misses.

As the game settled into the final fe minutes, West Alabama capitalized on a long scoring effort, just beating Milos Boskovic high, giving the Tigers a 2-1 lead with just under seven minutes remaing.

The Statesmen had a chance in the final seconds to tie it up, but a header was sent wide as time expired.

Delta State will look to rebound Sunday in Pensacola, Fla. as the Statesmen take on West Florida.
